Re: Garmin Nuvi 50LM Review (GPS Navigation)

uSD was also required for my 2465LM. Seems the older units do not have enough memory, so the uSD is needed.

Re: Garmin Nuvi 50LM Review (GPS Navigation)

I tried to update the India map again and failed. I was able to successfully update MalSing (Malaysia/Singapore) maps though!

If you have updated to 2014.30, please provide me the exact steps. I am not sure what I am missing.

These are the steps I follow.

1. Goto www.garmin.co.in and I see
Garmin Nuvi 50LM Review (GPS Navigation)-garmin1.jpg

2. After clicking Map Update City Navigator India NT 2014.30 I see
Garmin Nuvi 50LM Review (GPS Navigation)-garmin2.jpg

3. After selecting region "India" I see
Garmin Nuvi 50LM Review (GPS Navigation)-garmin3.jpg

4. After selecting India Map, I see
Garmin Nuvi 50LM Review (GPS Navigation)-garmin4.jpg

5. I click, "Next" and I get the error
Garmin Nuvi 50LM Review (GPS Navigation)-garmin5.jpg

6. After clicking "OK", I see (no URL for download and nothing happens!)
Garmin Nuvi 50LM Review (GPS Navigation)-garmin6.jpg

7. If I click "download GCP" link (though it is already installed/running), I see that it detects the device correctly

I tried using 'Garmin Express' application and it does not display any map updates (though it updated the firmware of the device to latest version).

Also, I was able to successfully update Malaysia/Singapore maps by selecting the same in step 4 above. Just does not work for India maps.

I have tried the exact same steps on Windows 7 (Firefox/IE) and Mac (Safari/Firefox) with exact same results. So I am wondering if I am doing this right.

Any help would be highly appreciated! Thanks.

The other way I have done it was to extract the map from the exe and just copy it to a SD card. I currently have 4 regions. Base map is US which is on the device itself. I have three SD cards one each for EU, SE Asia and India. I am using 2014.30 for India. Did you try on a SD card?

Are you by any chance on Firefox. That blocks the communicator plugin. I have to use Chrome for the upgrade.

The problem was that I was not getting the download link itself. Yes, I do have a 4GB microSD card inserted into the device.

For some reason, the plugin installation failed for chrome (latest version).

Just to update: I downloaded an ancient version of firefox (version 3.6, circa 2010, since garmin plugin is supposed to be compatible with firefox 3.6+ according to plugin installer page) and followed the process I described above (post #182). With this version, I was able to get the download link in step 5 (i.e., the plugin detected the device connected via usb). I downloaded the 902MB file and was able to successfully install the 2014.30 version of the map.

So, for records:

- the current version of firefox, i.e., 34.x.x (OSX/Win 7) does not work [for me, even safari (on OSX) or chrome (on win 7) did not work; was not able to install the plugin for latest version of chrome]

- Garmin Express does not work (does not show map updates; shows only firmware updates)

Anyway, the problem is resolved.

@pc73; Garmin Express is junk. Maybe it works in the US!

Glad your problem is resolved and good find btw on the older version of Firefox.
Just for clarity, I use Garmin Express - a client executable that I installed on my laptop. Attaching the snapshot of what I see today when I launch it. For reference.

Re: Garmin Nuvi 50LM Review (GPS Navigation)

Hi

Bought Nuvi 42lm. I was targeting 55lm, which is the latest but Nuvi 42 lm bought at 5.5K (snapdeal) Vs 55lm at 9.5K was big difference and I thought its not called for extra 4K.

The product came with latest software 2.20 and Garmin Express confirmed it on installation.

I have no problem with product except the search function, which we have to get use to, a radical shift from Google search.
Even in heavy fog today, it could acquire satellite and thereafter no disconnection till 40 km of Delhi city driving in early morning dense fog.

But, there is a strange problem with Hindi Voice assistance. It says (Dayein) for Left. The map correctly shows the arrow to left.
There is no problem with Indian English Language though, which I am using.
I did write to Garmin about this.

Indian English says North Hampshire for NH, and drives me mad in both US and Indian English. I find English UK says NH and leaves it at that.

I did try Garmin Express (as stated earlier); In my case, the Garmin Express does not show any map updates at all! It showed me only firmware updates. You screenshot seems to show map updates for US maps. I doubt if Garmin Express can be used to update India maps.

If I recall correctly, Indian English and English UK says North Hampshire for NH (really irritating) and English US is fine. I use English US.

Sorry it is the other way round vis a vis the UK and US versions. Just logically, why should US just use NH while UK calls it New Hampshire. Has to be the other way round. I always use English UK, just checked!

Were you by any chance using the 64-bit version of Chrome. I was thinking of going over to the 64-bit version but am worried about the compatibility with Garmin Communicator Plug-in. I searched the web and Gamin were reportedly pretty unresponsive and advising using Safari (whatever that is). I expect the 2015.10 to come in the next month or so (max two0, so am getting forearmed.

Yes, I was using 64-bit version of Chrome (Win 7). Safari (MAC OSX 10.9.5) also did not work for me.

Re: Garmin Nuvi 50LM Review (GPS Navigation)

Hi,

I've been using Garmin Nuvi 50LM for quite some time now. Would request the experts here to guide me as to whether it is possible to pre-plan a route on google maps or any other routing software and then load it onto the Garmin unit? I tried using the Garmin Basecamp software for this, it correctly reads my device but I am unable to load the route that I want onto it.

Thanks.

Did you try using the "Device->Send to Device" menu option ? Or is it not working for you ? In that case, does it display any error ?
