Spotted this ancient Ashok-Leyland-like "thing" at a construction site in Orissa.

Seems like a complete front panel re-build at some stage of this truck. Looking at the condition and the rust, I think this may well be greater than 20years old or may be even more.

Where exactly did you spot this?? Is that a trailor attached to this, or is it just a flat bed of some kind??

The truck to its left seems to be much younger. I cant see anything that tells me whether this is a Tata or a Leyland.

A small confusion. I was talking about the identity of the main truck in picture, not the one to its left, which I did recognise to be an ALL tipper.

Can you spot anything on this truck to recognise it??

Yes, I too don have any clue.
But a small look at steering wheel tells me its TM.still not sure

The rust-bucket looks like a ALL Tractor. I remember the old models used to have the steering axle width less than than the trailing axle. Since this was seen in AP where AL trucks are usually built taller (I might wrong here!)

Also, I am not sure but I have never seen Tata Tractors that are very old. I thought ALL had a monopoly it at that time.

It belongs to a relatives' construction company. I'm not sure what it is but in the company's asset list under the ORISSA segment an Ashok Leyland Comet is listed. I believe this is the one. It is carrying a 40 Ton low-bed trailer used for transporting bulldozers and tippers.

The truck to the right is an Ashok Leyland Taurus.

I believe this truck , along with a couple Tauruses , are at a construction site in ANGUL, orissa.

AL - 4019 with a lift axle semi trailor. I am not sure of the make of trailor as the hub covers had the name RN.

For all the AL and TML multi axle vehicles mentioned here, does anybody remember the multi axle long nosed water tankers from Volvo owned by Bhageerata Engineering and used in the Angamaly - Vytilla 4 laning work on NH 47 several years back? (late 1980s to early 1990s) Seems they were "repatriated" from Iraq. The capacity would have been 16 to 18 tonnes. Not sure.

Just to be sure, it is a 2 wheel axle, isn't it??

Also, what exactly will be the official GVW of this vehicle??

Officially three 4-wheel axles together are rated only upto 24tons, while two such axles are rated at 19tons. Normally a single 2wheel axle independently is 6tons.

Here we have 2 4-wheel axles, and 1-two wheel axle bunched together. If you add them independently, it still adds up to the same 24tons, while having 2-wheels less.

Any idea guys?

AFAIK that should be a 4 wheel axle & the GVW again is 24T
2 Wheel lift axles are used in TATA 3118 where that is self steered axle, since that is very near to front axle and non-steerable axle will affect driveability. But in this case, the axle need not be steered, so there won't be an issue of using 4 wheel axle

The Tata LPT3118c's lift axle is not a steerable axle at all. But over there the total rear axle's load bearing is 25ton and not 24ton. 25 tons on the rear three axles, with a 6ton front axle gives a total of 31tones

So in this case, will it also be a 25ton trailor with a 16ton tractor will allow a 41ton GVW???
