If you leave it for few months, chances are it will leave permanent engraving on the sensor (not actually the sensor, IR cut off filter or the bayer filter, rather the plastic filter on front).

Yes the longer it stays the more problematic it can be.

But not all fungi actually destroys the lens coatings and leave permanent damage. Luckily the fungi that is harmless to the glass is more common. The one that attacked my lens was this kind I suppose, because there were no problems on the glass coatings. I just assume that it is the same harmless fungi that has come on my sensor :)

Recently got into the DSLR world with Canon 1000D. The basic kit comes with I guess 18-75 Lens. So far, happy with it! Need to expand to better lenses as time passes (and bank account balance becomes > 0).:Frustrati

I am planning to pick up a 500D tomorrow. The only concern I have is that the grip is a tad small for my liking. Tried the camera grip at Canon Image Lounge and that greatly improves the ergonomics, but costs 8k which kind of makes it out of my budget right now. After lot of deliberations and change of minds from D90 to 50D, I have finally decided on 7D with 18 - 135. I know its kind of advanced for a beginner like me but I want something which doesnt get obsolete for atleast next 3 - 4 years.

Its costing around Rs. 1.1L with bill and warranty. I am trying some employee discount as a friend's wife was earlier with Canon.

Would appreciate suggestions, if any.

The 18-135 is a sort of 'single lens' solution for Canon DSLRs (works like a 28-200 on film SLRs). The object of SLRs is interchangeabel lenses so you use the lens that suits your purpose best. While the i8-135 is sold as a kit lens with the 7D, I would consider the 18-55IS + 55-200IS combo (same price as the 18-135) instead.

Alternately if tele zoom is not required a 500D with a 17-55 (28-80 on film SLR) might serve better.

After having gotten bloody irritated with my 500D+18-55+55-250 combo over the weekend while shooting wildlife, I'm not sure I agree.

I am a hobbyist, not a purist (as of now! :D) - I would personally prefer to ditch both in favor of the Tamron 18-270

Thanx Navin for your suggestions. In fact I am myself very confused between 18 - 135 and 18 - 55 + 55 - 200. But I believe a single lens portability is what that matters to me more hence decided on 18 - 135. Will rethink about it.

Have been using a Nikon D60 (not mine though) and dont want to go for 500D.

I am planning to buy my first DSLR camera. After going through lot of review on Amazon, so far I have selected Canon EOS 400D DSLR (10 Megapixel) inklusive EF-S18-55 lense. It is costing me 450 EUR which comes to around 30K. Let me know if it is a good deal or shall I buy it from India?
