More low light goodness from the 7D and Tamron 17-50 f/2.8 VC. Some of the pics with silky water are 1.6sec exposure. All handheld after 3 pegs of scotch and a 500ml can of Heineken :D

I'm no guru but I believe for crisp, low noise night shots, you must choose a low ISO (value depending on your camera's performance across different ISO values..for me its never beyond 800). Normally the best image quality comes with low ISO settings as these minimize any noise produced in the image making process. In low light photography some noise is almost inevitable and in some situations adds to the mood. Some experimentation is necessary with different ISO settings to find the upper ISO setting that limits noise to a comfortable level.
As for the aperture, choose something between f/11-f/16 for tack sharp city scapes. About the shutter speed, it is best chosen by the camera.(A/Av mode).
Some tips:
Don't rely on taking 'the one perfect shot', but take several photographs in case problems occur with the lighting, or lack thereof
Use self-timer/remote release, noise reduction softwares like Noiseware/noiseninja etc
Shorter focal length lenses/lenses with larger aperture are often better as they are not as sensitive to camera shake due to slow shutter speeds as are longer focal length lenses.
Learn to hold the camera properly to minimize camera shake at slower shutter speeds. Elbows tucked into the body and camera viewfinder braced by the head is the most stable camera holding technique. Also look for solid objects such as walls fences chairs, and garbage bins help to steady the camera - of course use a tripod if possible.If you plan to do handheld night shots or low light actions, then you need a camera that has low noise at high ISO and obviously the best low light performers are the pro models of Nikon and Canon. Different camera systems offer image stabilization or vibration reduction systems, either in the camera body or built into the lens. So experiment and find the slowest shutter speed that produces sharp pictures with each system
Subject motion, however, is always a consideration. If you want to freeze action as much as possible, then shifting to a higher ISO will buy you a few more stops of shutter speed. On the other hand, exaggerating the motion of nightlights (traffic streaks, fireworks etc) is a desirable thing and so using a slow ISO and a longer shutter speed is a good working combination.
So, possibilities are endless for low light photography. Just go out there and enjoy shooting. It seems you already got Shaw's Guide maybe you can also go through Bryan Peterson's Understanding exposure.

I got mine from malaysia (YL Photo). But when I got mine from Malaysia my supplier in India (in Bangalore) also had it in stock (I wold have bought it locally but I was going to YL to buy some lenses that were not available here and needed a bag to carry the kit home in).
If I knew the 33 was available I'd have asked for that. I came to know of the 33 after I got back from Malaysia.

What would be the likely price of model numbers 30/33?
I had an unsuccessful visit to palika bazaar (delhi) on saturday. Was shown two kata bags (i vageuly remember model number of one of them R 103 or something like that).
The two bags that the shopkeeper showed me were 11grand and 13grand :eek:. i was expecting to shell out not more than 4.5 to 5.5 grand

The 3N1-30 was about 8K. I dont know the price on the 33 or 103. Of late some resellers in India have figured out that they can get a premium for products like ThinkTank, Kata etc.. that are not frequently available (vs Tamrac etc...).
Wish I had known about your amnesia earlier...:D

Guys my friend is looking to buy a mid range dslr and asked me for suggestions . Since i dont know much about cameras i thought w will ask the gurus out here for their help .
I friend has narrowed the options to the sony alpha 550 with 14.2 mp and the nikon d90 with 12.4 mp.
I think the nikon has a larger view range with its kit lens as 18-105mm and the sony has 18-55mm.He is also planing to uy it with the kit lens only.
Which would have better picture clarity and which should he go for .Please advsie with some points supporting the cameras you suggest.

They don't have 3n1 33 but they could get it for you. 3n1 30 is priced at 5.9k

What is he going to be shooting mostly ???
D90 is more like an all rounder while A550 is a very good Sports shooter.

@sankar: thanks for providing the link, really helpful. have a question though - how has been your interaction with these guys? have you had any trouble with regards to order/shipment etc.? please do let me know as i'm planning to make some purchases from them.
