Probably an inconsequential doubt but here goes ..

If one has a 12MP camera but chooses to shoot pics at say 8MP, then how is the scaling achieved ?

I was wondering if less of the sensor is used or is the image resized via software. I'm keen to know if a 8MP photo would have higher saturation than a 12MP photo taken in the same camera.

In some cases less area of the sensor is used, in others the camera does the resizing. You can test it easily

1. Mount the camera on a tripod.
2. Take test shots at different sizes offered
3. View the shots.

In case less area is used the shots will be cropped. If not all the shots will have the same horizontal and vertical extents.

Finally finally finally, I got Nikon D700 into my bag clap:!
Getting used to was matter of 15 minutes as it has plenty of similarities with D90. I find the body small in my hands after using D90 with its battery grip over 11 months. Super excited about my next photo walk ! Now my bag is a 100% FX content. D700 will pair with Nikon 20mm 2.8, Nikon 50mm 1.4 and Sigma 70-200 2.8 as and when required :) Waiting for 29th, the arrival of Hoya filters.

Thanks to everyone whoever took part in our FX body discussions few pages back. It helped me in many ways. Will update more after the field trip.

Congrats Shaju and welcome to the FX world where no crop or conversion factors apply. :D

I can imagine your excitement. Look forward to seeing your pics especially those taken in low light. I am all set to order my very first CPL (Hoya HD) and a bunch of miscellaneous accessories next month.

Cheers!

Congrats Shaju. That is one awesome kit in your bag now clap:

all the Pros out there - I need some help. I got a Zeikos Vertical Battery Grip for my nikon d3000. I fixed it and to my surprise i find that the vertical shutter works only when you change the button settings to IR. In this mode the camera shutter does not function! For that to function i have to change it back to single frame option.

Is there any way i can get both of the shutter's working? I have viewed a lot of these on youtube and both the shutter actually work. help me please:

Congratulations. Now to get to see some snaps.

Congrats Shaju.

Bought a Carry case for my Nikon D90 and a Hoya 67mm UV Filter from London. The filter is awesome and worth its price of 35GBP.

I have been checking extensively on you tube and i understand that if you have to use the vertical shutter you have to set the shutter to IR. Once you switch your camera off and turn it on again it comes back to the regular single shutter mode! I guess this is how it is made, let me still investigate.

The pix look somewhat blurred!

Thanks. D90 is perfect weight according to me. I was using it with the MB-D80 battery pack and 2 batteries :)

Here is a test shot from D700. Its 17% of the original, 50mm at 1.4, ISO-200, 1/50 sec, natural window light. I must say, I had failed plenty of times to get the eyes in focus at 1.4 on my D90. The 51 focus points of D700 make it just spot on. This shot was a cake-walk, feeling happy with the full frame. Waiting to test its high ISO potential. :)

Borders might be bit larger than my usual images, because D700 lacks the 5:4 aspect ratio. I need to re-edit the border size that was customized for the D90 images till date.

@shaju: Awesome snap. What is the aspect ratio that the D700 offers?

P.S. It is *border*. :)

Thanks for the correction buddy. D700 has 3:2 aspect ratio, slightly different from all other regular ratios.

I have a question for the DSLR regulars: What file format do you guys use ? I always shoot in RAW since many months and find it confusing to chose between the options available on D700. Choices are as below, ignoring the JPEG options;

a) NEF (RAW) 12 bit, 14 bit, lossless compressed, compressed, uncompressed
b) TIFF (RGB)

I am not able to make out what suits me.

TIFF will be way too big. Check the file size for both after clicking in both formats.
