If you are on Linux, I suggest you try RAW Therapee. Truly amazing tool for batch workflow. You can download the 3.1 branch latest stable nightly builds. I am using those on windows, and they work great!

Guys, I would to see 2 effects in my pics (I have 110D with 18-55 IS kit lens):

1. Less haze on a bright sunny day - Is there any affordable ND filter which can reduce the haze but maintain the sharpness of the image?

2. Better rendering of clouds - I have seen pics with a dramatic cloud effect. I have seen pics where they dont appear flat. Any suggestion on this front ?

Search the net for HDR. It might be what you are looking for.

Get a CPL filter, will serve all your needs. ND is not for cutting haze but for long exposures and thereby requires a tripod in most cases. Remember CPL and ND reduces the light entering into the camera, so aperture number is directly influenced by that.

Here is a shot I took yesterday putting the CPL and ND together :)

3. Mention about a useful software that analyses EXIF and provides charts, about which all lenses were used and for how many times?
4. Last but not least basic tips. (The most important I felt was about insuring camera and lens while on overseas travel). Looks like some folks do insure camera as a part of home insurance (But it seems that is not valid for overseas travel)

PS; I have only one basic kit lens with me and hence post facto analysis wont help me much. But at least it lets me know, what lens person tends to use more on a certain type of a holiday. That helps choose what I lens I want to buy next.

Hi All,

Finally i ordered Canon 550d with kit lens at flipkart and i am getting Canon 50mm/f 1.8 lens free for rs.38795. I order this because i was anyway going to buy this 50mm/f 1.8 lense, so felt reasonable and went ahead.

And please can you suggest another zoom lens which can be bought for around 10-15k which will make a good beginner's kit.

Its sankey tank, Bangalore around 7pm (you can see the park lights are all ON), taken with a 20mm lens at f/16, ISO-100, 20 seconds. ND16 and CPL used. I assume it would have given 30 secs at f/22. Preparation part is nothing as I am still on the stage of 'shoot whatever comes' on the way :) Somehow I felt this particular spot was the best for this test. Things for a long exposure:
1) Fully charged battery (it drains out faster)
2) Rock steady tripod (I hung my camera bag on its hook)
3) Preferably faster memory card
4) View finder closing piece (D700 has a built-in metal curtain)

Similar water effect also can be attained without filters, that needs a darker surrounding or moon lit sky. But the usual blue hour shots are easy to handle with filters. I want to try longer exposures above 30 secs, but not possible without a cable release as one has to keep pressing the button on bulb mode with a timer in hand.

There used to be a mechanical timer device which could be screwed into the cable release and used for long shots, with hands off. I cannot find it, but this is what I could find on the net
