Maybe, we all need to tell Nikon to take off d3000 and d5000 off the website since both of them went out of production Too ;)

There is always left over stock of lower end models, since these are mass produced without back orders, hence when new bodies become available, these are still left on the website so the big retailers like Costco/bestbuy/etc can clear there stock without having to do a big clearance sale. But that is my opinion, take it or leave it ;)

We plan to gift a DSLR to our friend. He hasnt used a DSLR before. The budget is 50k.

He doesnt like the idea of changing lens. Could we buy him a Canon 1100D body alone with canon EF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS lens? Is that a viable option?

I could not find the 1100D body on sale at Flipkart and do not know how much that will cost. The lens comes at 28000.

Looks good and feels light.

I've used the thinktank holster v20 V1 and now use the V50 v2 with a speedbelt. Works pretty good for me. The little elastic pouch in the front is just awesome to slide in the lens cap and cleaning cloth. Has a side pouch for batteries and what not.

I too suggested an advanced P&S, but our man wants a DSLR and preferably with an all purpose lens.

550D would mean that there is not enough cash left for replacing the kit lens with a better zoom lens.

Or, as you suggested, buy a 1100D and get the lens separately. You will get better deals on a combo compared to separate buy.

The freebie bag which came along with the camera is okay but 1) hard to open quickly, 2) too big for the D3100, 3) looks ugly! So wanted one with the smallest possible size which hugs the contours of the camera.

My personal opinion is that buying the best body should be your aim because the body will remain for a long time. Lenses can/need to be added later anyways.

I think leaving the lens purchase for him would be a good idea. Get him a 650D if you can wait for a few weeks (i would have done that at any cost looking at the upgrades). Else just buy the 600D which is within 50k.

Beg to differ. A body can do only so much unless you are looking for something specific. If you are a casual/hobbyist. It makes sense to buy a decent body and put your money on glass.

I agree with your second point though. Lens purchase decision is best left to the user.

I agree that the body has a limited role to play, but IMHO the there is a huge difference between the 1100D and the announced 650D specially fro someone new to photography.

Anyways the imp point i want to make is that the body is a onetime investment so one should not compromise within the available budget. you can always add a lens later.:thumbs up
