Intentions are to have a wider aperture & more optical quality (Less CA, lower distortions, more sharpness) than the Sony DT 18-55mm which is not a bad one at all, as a kit lens.

+1. I have the non-VC Canon version. I used it extensively on my 1000D before moving to Pentax. IMO its VFM and a perfect upgrade from the kit lens.

Which model of Pentax do you have ? As far as I know, Pentax does not have any presence in India. How do you manage service and waranty ?

Do any of our tbhp members have Pentax K5 and K30 ? For my first DSLR, I'm torn btw the Canon T3i with kit lens and Pentax K5/K30 with 18-55 WR lens.

Its K5, purchased here in Australia. Better to stick with Canon/Nikon in India. You can ask your friend to import K5/K30 but again its a hassle if something goes wrong.

Is the K5 your first DSLR ? How do you rate K5's performance ?
From what I've read so far, K5 seems to have very good reviews.

Hi Friends,

What about 33K for Nikon D3200? This is with Standard Lens 18-55.

Its an absolute waste, rather recommend a D5100 for 4-5k extra or maybe the basic D3100 or else look for something better in canon, they've better options in their EOS 4xx or 5xx range I guess.

Re: The DSLR Thread

I am a newbee to the world of SLRs and have decided to take the plunge. Idea is to develop an interest, understanding and knowledge in the field of photography and of course to shoot some nice pictures.

I read a lot about various cameras available in the market and have kind of settled on getting the Nikon D7000 (it comes bundled with 18-105 VR kit lens). In the end it was a close fight between the D7000 and Sony SLT A77 (that comes with slightly better and wider 16-105 lens). Sony is about 20k more expensive though and Nikon's strong heritage in photography swayed it in Nikon's favor.

This camera with the kit lens is available for about 78k on Flipkart. On homeshop18 it is available for 72.7k (plus additional 2.5k off using a coupon). On jjmehta's it is available for 72.5k.

Now the question is - is it wise to buy it at homeshop18 or jjmehtas? Anybody has any opinions on jjmehtas? I am mighty scared of making such a huge purchase on homeshop18 (Although I have a positive experience with them but that was a small purchase). I might be more inclined to buy it at jjmehtas if they are good and genuine. Are there any other places that I should look for. Any stores in Bangalore that I can check out? Thanks for any pointers.

Try Shetala (Mantri Mall or near Swagath or Shree Complex opp RBANMS ground) or the 2 shops in Majestic area (one is Jayesh-bhai's joint, the other I am forgetting but it is quite close to National Market; plenty of references in this thread).

I had enquired a couple of weeks back, and Shetala Mantri Mall had quoted 60-something-K. Body only is less than 60K.

Found a funny article at Mansurovs. Here is the link...some of you might have already read this. But for rest of the folks, enjoy:

Diseases That Plague Photographers

Wonder how many folks in this thread are affected b one or more of the diseases?
