kartikk, your advice is well meant but a bit misplaced IMO. You are forgetting a few things:

a) Shipping and customs duties that will boost the overall cost of the kit by 30-40% including shipping. Customs is charged on cost + shipping + insurance if any. So a kit that costs $2K will cost $2600-2800

b) Miscellaneous charges by the courier. If it comes via India Post, God help the buyer.

c) Most importantly no warranty support in India for the camera body though the lens will be supported.

This applies to any Canikon shipped to India via a web purchase.

Forgot to mention, the reason I said use MyUS is you would exactly know what is your shipping rate upfront and the quote currently for a 3kg parcel on DHL which ships to any big city in India directly (no intermediaries) is $95, with MyUS you also get to know whats your exchange rate too, just like in Paypal.

It isnt as bad as people make it out to be, I have had items shipped and the only trade off where I agree with you completely is the warranty, but this is a huge price drop for the kit.

I hope Canon responds after all its the holiday shopping season

I have never shopped from MyUS. So extrapolating your previous experience here, how much is the landed cost of 2100 USD kit including all charges? Just keep in mind Customs is the big bug bear...I know after having purchased 1000s of USD worth of photo support equipment from abroad

Re: The DSLR Thread

The biggest item I've got shipped is a flash Canon 430EX, I've also got 1.4EX III teleconverter apart from filters, cards and smaller, nick nacks, MyUS works like your exporter from the US, they give you a US address, phone number etc. where you ship your items, its a FL address, and most retailers have free shipping to FL as its mostly a tax free state, like DE. They dismantle the original packaging, ask your verification etc.. after that depending on the membership level you have with MyUS, you can get one large package shipped or many smaller packages shipped, one needs to work out the math on shipping and exchange rate. I do go through all this only if there is a serious price difference or your not getting the item in India. Like I managed to get the 1.4III teleconverter for $324+(~Rs1800 customs) final price to me when it reached my home in Blr. which I think is difficult to match.

A good thing which I havent explored is that you can ask MyUS to enter a VAT/TIN number and show your purchase as a business expense . I must admit I have done this only twice and hence dont know any other leagal/custom aspect of it. Just sharing my experience.

Re: The DSLR Thread

Happened to pick up a IR remote for 1pound when it was on sale last month and found it actually works nicely with D5100.

Re: The DSLR Thread

Pertaining to my query some 1-2 pages back, just wanted to inform all that both Nikon 300F4 and 70-300 are already booked. Hence I have no option, but to take the Sigma 150-500 with the 550D body for my Bharatpur trip. I was reading a few reviews and they all seem to say that the lens produces soft images (not sharp) at 500mm end; though sharpness can be improved upto some extent by stepping down the aperture from F8 to F11. Does anyone here on the forum have this lens on either Nikon or Canon mount? Can someone share your experiences with this lens if you have any?

The D7000 with 18-105 and whole lot of kit was being sold for $996 during thanksgiving but it has now gone up by $200. From the current price, this appears to be a good but hope the 55-200 is with VR.

Re: The DSLR Thread

Is Nikon D5100 with kit-lens for 28,000 INR a good deal? (with bill and Nikon India warranty)

Would I get it cheaper at VT (Mumbai)? VT is 30kms away. Just trying to save half a day. Any idea?

Thanks in advance

Considering its 33000 online, 28K seems like a good deal

Sir where are you getting this deal from? Homeshop18 recently increased their price to 34000 :( is this offer you're getting online or only in mumbai? Whizz camera shop in BLR also has not reduced prices. Its 33000 here.

I thought so. Even I was seeing 33K consistently across multiple sites. Thanks.

Got the following offer in ebay.in under deals:
http://www.ebay.in/itm/200866911340?...#ht_6226wt_906

Just too tempting. I placed the order.

Go for it. The seller seems to have good quantity.
