It feels very solid in the hand (much better than D5100 in that aspect) and was joy to use. I'd say head on to a store and play with both. One good idea is to take a SD card, go to a store where you can spend some time with both, take some pics there with both, come back and have a look on your PC! Some work but will give you lot of answers.
I have played a lot with the D3200 already. I used D90 just once and found it more capable with all those 11 AF points and rugged build and few other features. The menu on the D3200 is more user friendly comparatively, which is a good to have thing. Anyways, lets see what my pal likes at the end. Thanks.

Not sure what you mean by 'justified' but here are my thoughts.

The D90 was introduced in 2008 and the D3200 in 2012. 4 years for DSLRs is a generation apart much like it is for PC technologies. There's absolutely nothing wrong with buying a D90 just that it is obsolete and your friend/relative would do better by buying a more contemporary camera. It is like buying a PC with a new gen Core i3/i5/i7 processor instead of a Core 2 Duo.

You are absolutely right - MP is not the yardstick by which you measure a camera just like clock speed is not the only yardstick for processor performance. So here are is a review by DXO that may put this in perspective.

http://www.dxomark.com/index.php/Cam...(brand2)/Nikon

The biggest advantage of the D90 as I see it is the motor drive that enables you to buy older 'D' series lenses instead of being stuck to buying only the more expensive AF-S varieties.

I'd keep go in for option # 1. Keep the kit lens and get a 35mm F/1.8 for low light photography. Also, buy a decent quality tripod or monopod.

Camera (with kit lens) would cost me 30K - I find it ok to spend another 12K for lens ( as of now )
Is there any better lens - if I am definitely going to stick with street/candid/low light?

Thanks,

Ace.

My suggestion would be drop the Kit lense and take the 35mm prime with either 55-200 or 55-300 telephoto depending on your budget.

Sony's marketing of the NEX in India is pathetic. If they can sell the NEX-5N and NEX-5R in Pakistan then why not India? (Yes, Sony Pakistan site says these are available) They do sell all NEX models in China too. Bad Sony, very bad!!

NEX-7 for 30-35K with kit lens?! Are you serious? It would be more than a steal deal!

:( B&H visit log from you would have been a good read.

Usually the store is closed on Jewish holidays. Some interesting facts from B&H Wikipedia page.

"The business is owned by Herman Schreiber. Schreiber and many of the store's employees are observant Satmar Hasidic Jews who close the store on Shabbat and Jewish holidays except for Hanukkah (Jewish law does not prohibit work during that holiday, except during Shabbat itself). The Web site is open, but orders are not taken or shipped between Friday evening and Saturday evening and on Jewish holidays.[2][3] Surpassed only by the Diamond District in terms of Orthodox employment, the company is a vital part of the community's financial health, with hundreds of Orthodox Jews on staff. An Orthodox Jewish bus company provides daily service to and from Kiryas Joel, a Satmar village in Orange County, New York."

The thing is I am not sure how cameras fit into the larger scheme of things at the deep-in-trouble Sony Corp. They are bleeding heavily due to the TV business tanking, again courtesy Samsung and others. But their investment in Oly is an eyebrow raiser.

I seriously doubt these guys are keen to promote the NEX range here. I don't recall a recent print ad with the NEX system, instead highlighting the ubiquitous PNS cameras.

So I plan to wait for a while for the NEX 7. If it doesn't show up in the next 1-2 months then it is 'Sayonara' to Sony.

As an aside to all this - a 'DX being ignored?' post has appeared on Thom Hogan's site. Check it out at bythom.com.

Is Canon doing the same thing? Both these biggies are normally in step with their product introduction strategies.

PS - The cheapest deal on the NEX 7 in the USA is $1,118, about 59.2K at today's exchange prices. NEX 7 @ Rs 30-35K is extremely doubtful.

Hard luck Samurai, I know that superstore is indeed a pilgrimage spot and one can easily spend most part of a day there. Have you tried ordering online instead or are you planning to go back next day?

Build a solid collection of lenses you want to own first and then go for a body upgrade - will save you a lot of heart and pocket burn later on. This way you can benefit from buying the latest body when you are ready as lenses have a much longer life. Try servicing the body - it might fix the issue and be cost effective.

Consider a good quality wide angle for landscapes - the Sigma 10-20 and Tamron 10-24 are great value buys if you plan to stick to crop sensor bodies.

Current Equipment which i bought 3+ years ago is as follows :-

Nikon D40x with 18mm-55mm stock lens. However, stock lens auto-focus has gone kaput due to camera getting drenched in rains once. So it now works only in manual focus which is a pain to use. Therefore, I stopped using the stock lens completely

Nikon D40x Body : Whenever I take some sky shots, there is some light patch at bottom right hand corner which is visible ONLY against light background. Will this problem go away if i get the body serviced?

Tamaron 70mm-300mm : This one is in good condition but, this lens is practically useless at night as it just cannot focus.

Need suggestion whether to buy another Nikon and use the Tamaron Telephoto lens OR sell the entire current equipment and build the equipment from the scratch?

If it's the latter, i dont mind buying the Camera first and build the lens in a few months down the line.

Also, what price can i expect if i am selling the entire equipment away?

Re: The DSLR Thread

Guys,
Thank you for all the help.(Rachit, R2D2 and all others contributing to this thread with reviews and info)
I tried out D5100 at my friend's place- and it fits fine in my hands - and feels good to use.
Can't wait to get mine!

Meanwhile a deal update (for others who maybe are looking too) -

On Zoomin - If you apply the Nikon D5100 coupon - NIKD5100
you get nice INR 3901 off

They ship it free - and net landing = INR 29,999

Most probably I am ordering today- If I don't get confirmation from local shop ( for any better deal ).

One Q!-
Where do I get the best deals on lenses?
Looking for a Nikon 35mm (1.8) AF-S -Any better deal than 11.9K.

Thanks!

Ace.

P.S. I am in no way connected to zoomin or any seller - just sharing what I found.

Please visit again and let us see the inside of this shop.
I am curious to see that overhead conveyer belt system where they hang the product you have chosen and the belt carries it to the billing desk. At least that is what I have heard. Might be wrong.

Nex-7 is worth a wait in my opinion. It even outshines (though marginally) the A-77 in terms of noise performance. 35K is only a dream price, it will be in the range you mentioned.
