No idea on that one Karthik. I am on Canon. So no idea on G vs D versions.


I mostly get things from FotoCricle. He is a south India distributor for Nikon and Canon. Maybe online prices would be lesser. But I prefer going there and buying.

You need to buy a 35mm lens since that would become ~50mm on D3300 (35*1.5).

Just one note, "AF Nikkor 50 mm f/1.8D" will not work with D3300 (I.e. lens will work in full manual, but will not auto-focus).

There would be situations where you would want a close up of the subject without getting too near. So 55-200 makes a lot of sense. Also ask them if they can give you 18-105 instead of these two lenses. I would have recommended 18-200/18-300 but they are way too expensive. One zoom with a wide range offers the convenience of not having to change lenses.

You can have better explanation in Dpreview Article (read Sensor size )or this wiki article. All Nikon APS-C camera's have Crop factor 1.5 and lens focal length are marked w.r.t to 35mm film or Full frame (even for Dx lens). Hence whenever you use certain mm on lens on APS-C camera, effective filed of view (when compared to Full frame) is same as focal length X crop factor of the sensor.

I broke the 18-55 kit lense on my Nikon D3100, and ended up buying 70-300 one on an emergency basis without any research and with an assumption that I'll be able to get the lense repaired later.

Sadly it seems repair won't help matters, and now I'm inclined towards buying either the 18-55 or some suitable replacement. Need is not specific, just the usual indoor pics and occasional outdoor ones where 70mm doesn't serve the purpose. Talked to a friend and he suggested 35mm 1.8g.

I want to know if this would be a suitable replacement? I am willing to spend upto 25K if a single lense can serve the purpose for most needs below 70mm.please:

35mm 1.8g is a pretty good lens for indoors since it lets in so much more light.

I would recommend purchasing another 18-55 + 35mm.

The 50mm's are a pain to use if your cam doesnt support auto focus of it. I have a brand new one which I have put aside for sale since its a pain to use when needed without autofocus.

The 35mm is a nice lens. Get it but you will need the 18-55 too.

Inquired about the prices, 35mm is 9K and 18-55 is retailing for 5.5K. I'm hoping the prices are not on a higher side.

Would I have to then buy another one if some day I intend to try those wide angle shots many of you so beautifully capture?

I have both the 35 mm and the kit lens. But my daily driver is the 35 mm. Of course it means that you have to move closer to or farther from the subject. As far as focusing is concerned, I prefer to use M/A mode rather than fully auto mode and manually focus. This gives much better pics. It is quite easy to learn to focus manually and is really useful when shooting crowded frames.
For ex, if i'm shooting a pic of my daughter playing, in auto mode, the focus is often the toys in the foreground. With manual focus it is easy to correct. It is especially useful when shooting a frame with many people. My wife never complains that she is blurred.
And it is a very fast lens.

I have experience using a "point and shoot camera", no in-depth idea of lenses.

Please suggest a good DSLR camera, I have the D3200 and D5100 in mind, my budget is 30K inclusive of basic lens provided in the kit.

I am keen on using my DLSR for basic video recording also, my budget does not permit me to buy a camcorder in addition to a DSLR.

I would recommend getting 35mm from Flipkart for 7.5k (next day delivery + cash on delivery).

18mm is pretty wide to begin with. I think you can wait for wide angle lenses since those cost 30k+.

I would suggest Nikon D3300 and Canon 1200D. Both cost 31 - 33k and have similar capabilities. Out of these two, D3300 is better in Video.

For most of your "baby" shots the 18-55 kit lense is enough.

The "D" lense does not have a built in motor, so you will have to focus manually. Avoid it if you are not used to manual focus. I have the previous version of this lense, but then I was brought up on manual focus.

I would advise you to get the AF-S DX 35mm F1.8, instead of the 50mm. That will give you a good low light lense. If you want a bargain, then search the e-retailers - Flipkart, Snapdeal, Amazon. They are basically front end for a lot of sellers. The advantage over small e-retailers is that they manage the whole sale from collecting money to delivery. I bought both my D3300 and the 35mm F1.8 lense on the net.

35mm is a very good lens, very good for low light photography and bokeh. It is the only lens I use for indoor photography. The price was 14k when I bought it 6 months back. With the crop factor, it becomes a 50mm lens on my D5100. It is really value for money at the current price.:thumbs up

I use 18-55 for outdoor photography - suffice for most of the uses. Planning to get a 18-140 for a better zoom range.

I would suggest go for a 18-200. This will be a general purpose lens and you will never have to remove it till the time you want to go for higher lenses.
