No, Auto is not clear. Relative to size of auto, number plate is large enough to be legible. A sharp image should have clear number plate at this size.

Similar issue with faces.

Issue with this image might not be due to lens at all. To troubleshoot:

1. Use a tripod to eliminate camera shake
2. Try manually focus to eliminate focus issue (live view + magnification might help)

Actually, let's make that 7 floors worth of height. To put things in perspective, here is the full image:



Focus point is in the blue sheet (just right of centre of the sheet)

This image is auto-adjusted. The cropped image above was not.Do you have any pics that you have taken at that focal length & distance for comparison ?

I think that might be the reason:

1. Focus is not in the area of Auto
2. Handheld + 1/15 second exposure

Even a very minor shake will move numbers in auto by quite a few pixels at distance of ~200 feets (triangulate based on height of 7th floor + assumed distance of 150 feet from building). That would make picture soft or noisy.

Can you try cropping the part where lens was focused.

I will try a similar photo. Would be interesting to see if number plates show up in 100% crop with similar distance. I think tripod should do the trick since the subject is stationary.

@condor - Sharpness of most lens tend to fall off from center to edge. So what you are seeing is not unusual. Pricier lenses tend to be sharp all across the frame. Ofcourse, using a tripod helps improve sharpness all across.

100% crop of the center with a center cross point as the point of focus usually tells us if the lens is sharp or not.

Well, I have a pic taken at 12mm (24mm effective), you can read the number plate of the Jeep parked on the extreme left side.

Horizontal distance here is approximately what I had, but jeep was pretty much at eye-level here, unlike the 7th floor view that I had in the pic that I posted.

@condor, try out different lenses to see if its a lens related problem. Try focusing using live view, is the sharpness better than using the usual phase detect on DSLRs ?

Sticking a newspaper on a wall and shooting it might also help. You need to shoot at sufficient low shutter speeds, or use a tripod to rule out camera shake.

This pic is also shot at a much higher speed (1/200). That would have also helped with sharpness.
