ALFA does not take credit cards. Also Digicam zone in Pallika bazaar will give you a better deal(Bargained from both in my case).
For the best deal(you may save around 2000rs) go to Pritam studios at chandni chowk. Its near moti cinema.
Make sure you get the 2 year warranty and the 1GB card which is with the deal.
Another caveat. If you pay by card you have to pay 2.5% extra, so going to a digicam zone may get you the same prices(GK II M Block market).
I paid part by cash and part by card.

Thanx TSK, your inputs have been very valuable. I intend to pay in cash; so I thing buying from pritam will get me a better deal. Currently I am buying only the 350D kit, with 18-55 kit lens and a tripod; no other lens or cleaning device right now.
P.S. I have been a sleepign member of paai.in for some time; hope to start contributing once I get my cam.

If you pay cash you will get the 350D + Kit lens + 1GB card = 45000rs. He will say 46000rs, but you have to bargain hard.
Make sure you get a UV filter as it will protect your lens and it costs about 300rs only. Get a lens cleaning solution and cloth(200rs or so) as its very important. Everytime I go outdoor shooting I have to clean the filter surface due to the high amount of dust we have here.

jjmehta are selling 350D + kit lens + 1GB CF + UV filter + V bag for 42995/-. And this includes two years warranty from canon india. So I guess I must get the same deal from Alfa/Preetam as well; otherwise I will get it from jjmehta.

bought a D50

Hi,

After a lot of research and help/suggessions from tsk1979, I finally bought my first dSLR - a D50 yesterday. Initially I was in the mood to buy Canon 350D, but when I held it in my hands it felt puny, just didn't have that feel to it; so I went for D50.
I bought it from Pritam Studion, Chandni Chowk, without bill and warranty (scares me but the difference was too much). I got the body for 29K, 1 GB SD card (SanDisk) for 1750, UV filter for 200 and a camera bag for 200. It totals to 31150, add 850 for credit card surcharge; thus the total damages were 32K.
I was browsing the net today and found some links regd refurbished D50s. This is the first electronic gadget I have ever bought without B&W, so a little apprehensive. How's Pritam's reputation, will they sell refurbished ones as new; is there any way to tell a used one from a new one???
I am new to photography and learning. Will upload some of my shots this week-end.

It was this fear of getting a dodo which made me go towards canon, but as far as pritam is concerned they are a really old store and a reputable one. So you dont have to worry about getting refurbished stuff.
Congrats on your purchase dude! Looking forward to seeing some pics.

Could someone please suggest my friend a good entry level to mid-level digital SLR camera with relevant prices?

He is a hobby photographer and has a lot of good pics to his credit even with a simple 3MP camera. He is planning to upgrade to something better. He is no professional, but has a good sense of shots.

One of his relatives is willing to get one from Singapore.

Looking forward to suggestions.
Thanks in advance.

Congrats on the purchase, Suman.

This is the camera that i am eyeing as well (and the reason i stumbled upon this thread)

Guys, any idea where in Bangalore i can get a good price?

The jjmehta website mentions 450D body plus twin lens kit at 54K. It seems people have a bias against kit lenses, that they do not perform up to the mark as far as sharpness goes. But then the alternatives they suggest dont fit the budget either.
Besides, i am thinking, for a new dSLR user like me, spending a ton of money on lenses right now doesnt make sense. Right?

amitoj, the 18-55IS breaks the tradition. Its a kit lens which actually can take very sharp images, and most reviewers have published rave reviews.
As for the second lens in the kit, if its 55-250Is, thats also an amazing lens for the price.
Right now for the budget shooter I recommend 4 classes
Ultra wide (Canon sigma or Tamron 10-22,10-20,12-24)
Wide (Canon 18-55IS)
Zoom(55-250IS or 70-300IS)
The 70-300Is is called the "hidden L" by reviewers and has an excellent image quality

Thanks Amitoj! Its a truly remarkable camera & the 18-55IS kit lens is no slouch either. Just that the 55-250 IS does beckon if you're going in search of wild life or sports action.

Otherwise, the 18-55 IS is doing me very well so far!

Best would be to get it from the US if you know someone coming now as they have a really good twin-lens kit offer, check out the online store of B&H (Photo, Video & Pro Audio) for more details.

Its better to buy from Canon if you're thinking of going the JJ Mehta route as prices would be almost the same; "grey" would be a much cheaper option if someone knows the shop personally & has used them.
