how much you paid for this lens ? can you share some of your initial feedback regarding the lens especially at the 300 side of the performance.

Thanks, got it for 17,500 with bill/warranty. Have taken a only a few shots with it, but I feel its great with the few samples i have seen. It perfectly complements the kit lens.

To all 550D / T2i users.

Canon has released firmware version 1.0.9.

You can get it upgraded here- Canon EOS REBEL T2i / 550D Firmware Update

Anybody tried this test with their dSLR?

I found the answer to this question. The 12-60mm is designed to work with phase detect AF, while EPL1 uses contrast detect. The 12-60 will work with EPL1, but will make lot of noise and will be slow. So it is not really ideal.

Is Bangalore (Jayesh) the cheapest place to get Canon equipment? I am considering the 400mm f5.6L, sent a text to Jayesh and he quoted 72k with bw. Isn't that a bit too much considering that it retails for about $1200?

A quick question does it make sense to buy 105mm F2.8 kiron 1:1 macro (manual)
instead of investing in Tamron SP 90mm F2.8 macro or Sigma 105mm 2.8 1:1 macro lens.

The price difference is around 50% and AF is sacrificed , I am reading good things about this old manual macro.

Thanks some time back I thought of buying this but now I have developed habit of keeping the neck strap on always :-) to avoid repeat.

what would be a good price (in Bangalore) for :

Nikon D3100
18-55 VR lens
55-200 VR lens
Bag
8 GB memory card.

also, expert opinions required about D3100

thanks in advance.

Do consider the 18-105mm lens. Its a wonderful lens. I do not know the price in India though.

Can I give you a suggestion (Please ignore if you feel inappropriate)
You should be looking at the following:
Nikon D3100
18-105 VR lens (55mm is a very frustrating cut-off. 105 will cover much more range)
55-300 VR lens. (55-300 is comparatively inexpensive when compared to the 70-300 since it supports DX format)
Bag
8 GB memory card.

All the best!

I have no idea of "kiron" brand. If it is Nikor, then I would recommend it, as AF is rarely an asset while taking macro shots. In fact at times manual is preferred as AF will focus at wrong point.

I don't think anyone here yet has a D3100, I suppose I have read something at the BCM touring forum though.

D3100 has better SNR (signal to noise ration) at high ISO than D3000 and Canon 1000.
Which means more usability at 3200 and 6400. Supposed to rival its higher (but older Nk D5000)

Movie mode has auto focus, but reviews are dismal about AF abilities in movie mode.

Picture burst mode is 3 snaps per sec. Which is basic for an SLR. Comparable to Canon 1000D, but lesser than Canon 500d or Nikon D5000.

MSRP with 18-55VR lens is 32K - so I would expect it to be priced around that only (since it is very recently released)

There is one difference between Canons and Nikon's at this price point (less than 35K):
Nikons have slightly "better" (mathematically) sensor picture quality (effective bits and SNR) wise. How much that traslates to a better looking picture to our eyes? Well only you can judge that.

Second thing is that Nikon's don't come with in body focussing motors. Hence, you have to use lenses which have focus motors in them. Not a big deal if you plan to use lens compatible with D3000/D3100/D5000 in future also.

However, canon offers in-body focus motors - which means you can use old lens (if you have it available) also (the ones that don't have lense motors).
Old Third party lenses also find it easier to operate on new Canon body than new Nikon.

PS: FORUM:
Allow me this chance to ask - is there an organised market for second hand lenses (old or new) in India?

One of my friends bought it a month's back at Bangalore from GK VALE, Koramngala 80 ft. Road .
31K for kit and UV filter. 4GB memory card in the kit.

Some shops like Fotocircle might offer you better price than this too, just that cash payment would be preferred then.
