well Kiron has cult status and it is said optically it was best macro ever made.On e-bay the prices are touching stratosphere in the range of 350$ if ever this lens appears for sale and importing to India means shipping and customes hassels. Sadly in the state of indecision I missed the lens under-question.

BTW Nikkor is not necessarily that good always for example 28mm F2.8 Nikor AI sells at ridiculously high price partly because Adapter are available for Canon EOS bodies and also it works on Nikon DSLR in manual mode.
Also I am not aware of any good manual Nikor lens.

Compared to this any other 28mm old manual lenses are far better.

Amit. You should have stuck to Pentax world. You can then talk freely about Kirons, Komines, Vivitar Series Ones, Takumars, CZs

I too would like to get my hands on a Kiron/Lester Dine 105/2.8 for macro shootings. K-mount, of course.

Options available to you are
  1. 18-105mm
  2. 28-135mm
  3. 18-200mm

But I would always keep separate lenses for both Wide angle and telephoto.

Not sharing price is understood, however, opinions can always be posted openly.

Especially if they will aid in decision making.

What about Canon 500d vs Nikon d5000?
Considering that most of "inexpensive" lenses of Nikon as well as Canon are from earlier generation.

I wish I owned the body to write opinions here
As I said, he is not a member here, so better to talk to him for personal opinions which might help in buying or avoiding this body. Generally speaking, Better Photography mag has reviewed this body last month as the best beginner level choice (main reason my friend bought it) and there are plenty of reviews online too. Hope that helps.

Quite a few BHPians have picked up the Nikon D3100 including me.
I bought the body+18-55 vr kit for 29500 including VAT bill and 2 years manuf. warranty.
Apparently, price has gone up by 3k everywhere.
Ask around, someone might be carrying the 30k stock and you may get lucky.

Exactly what I thought checking the dollar fluctuations ! Even if someone has the old stock, its tough to get for that price unless you know the seller very well.

I'm sorry but I couldn't resist - what on earth are you saying?
You are so far from the truth that I can't even start to get you back in line.
The Nikkor (double k, BTW) 28mm AiS is a legendary lens. One of the best 28mm's ever made. It was the first 28mm in the world to feature close focus correction on a wide angle and opened a whole new world of perspective for photographers, allowing them to get really close to the subject and yet take in more of the scene. It is a stellar lens perhaps only outdone by the now discontinued 28mm f1.4 AF in the Nikon range.
That is the reason why it still commands a good price and not because it can be used on Canon cameras with some sort of adapter. Jeez!

You may hold your love to Nikkors , My observation is based on the results produced by these lenses and comparison tests published all over the net.
Also used market prices are an indicator of the value people assign to any material.

Well I am not here to fight any kind of holy war of Brand X vs any other brand but it is a Fact that in the manual Focus era Nikon and Canon did not had the presence they have today

Please compare prices of e-bay or any auction site of your choice and also results on flicker of 28mm F1.4 lenses from Nikon / Canon vs those from Carl Zeiss , CZJ , Rollei , Ashai , Contex, Schnider-creuznach and others.

Nikon and Canon arrived on the scene post 80s.

FYI the going rate of Schnider-creuznach vintage 28mm F1.4 is more then 1000 US $ , Carl Zeuss Distagon is also in between 700 - 1000 US$
Fujinon EBC lenses are upword of 300$ cheapest of the lot is Takumar 24mm which is retaling for 300$

Whereas, Carl Zeiss Jena ( Made in East Germany after WW2) , Jupiter ( russian copy of the German formula) and Nikon AIS 28mm F1.4 is approx 100 -200 US $.

Even Tomioka lens made by a company which no longer exists are 3X costlier then Canon and Nikon lenses of MF era.

Canon 28mm F1.4 FD was excellent lens optically but today it have vary less value because FD mount lens need optical adapter for EOS which degrades quality.
