610 was launched very recently so I doubt that it has been phased out yet. Is this alpha a pioneer showroom/dealer who has given you that info?
BTW, pioneer website still have this player on their site.

Gold plated serves no purpose other than the fact that the kabadi may pay a few rupees more for it when you throw it away.

DVP3996 (Rs 3900)
DVP3368 (Rs 3700)
DVP3388 (Rs 4900)

All of the above come with USB 2.0 and a bundled HDMI cable. They play a similar range of formats (including DivX). The 3388 claims to have "gold-plated" HDMI connectors, but I don't see any additional features that justify the 1K premium.

Not answering your question directly here but I was shopping for a DVD player and last week went around shops looking for Pioneer or Phillips but as I didn't come across any selling Pioneer, I happened to checkout the Phillips models. I specifically asked for 3996, he didn't have that but said that 3388 is the newest release and an upgrade to 3996. I just checked it out and it played very nicely and has many features like optical out, co-ax out, 5.1 DTS etc and come with free good quality HDMI cable which I thought was nice, so I went ahead and bought it. I put in a DVD which my comp refused to play and it just played it without any fuss and the movie came out brilliantly on my Pana LCD. I also checked out the Phillips site and it does happen to be the latest model.

The mrp was 5900 but the store gave me a discount and I got it for Rs.4,600 which going by some posts here is a good deal.

That was helpful. But my doubt is whether the 3388 (Rs 4990 in Bombay) has any must-have features that are missing in the 3368 (Rs 3600). The latter's easily available here and looks like the former, except it's got a matte black finish, not glossy. The notable advantages in the 3388 seem to be the optical digital out, DTS and WMV playback. All else seems to be the same, including the bundled HDMI cable, so I'm wondering if the premium of Rs 1400 is justified. Especially since we'll all be moving to Blu-ray and the like in a few years.

The 3996 is available too (for 38K) but it doesn't look half as good.

I need some information. If anyone is working in LG or knows contacts within LG, I would like the dealer prices for LG electronics products. (I won a dvd player through a contest and have the option of changing to any LG product by paying the difference of dealer prices).

I considered this player -- it looks good, has decent features, and is available in Mumbai for around 34K. However, I decided against it because I was told it doesn't play old DivX formats. Also it has no HDMI port, and as I intend to buy an LCD/plasma panel soon, this was a drawback. So I'm still torn between the 3368 and 3388, with no clear resolution in sight. Help!

I don't think we need to be unnecessarily worried about Blue-ray for another couple of years at least and even then I don't think we will have all movies coming out on blue-ray but DVD is going to be here for more time than you think.

For all we know Blue-ray might not take off at all.

Pioneer DV 220 KV-K

I bought a Pioneer DV 220 KV-K player a couple of days back for Rs. 3800/-.

HDMI(with 1080p upscaling)/CD-USB ripping/Karoke/etc.

It looks very good in black.

Has anyone bought this model recently? Just curious to know if I paid right

Question on region coding

I have a sony ns78h DVD player bought here and it seems to be able to play region 1 imports, and also the locally made DVDs by Excel/Sony/Big and the rest that I think are region 5 coded. The rear panel of the player says region 3, the piece sold by Sony India is a Malaysia made one.
I am ordering some DVDs from Amazon UK, and these will be region 2.
Am I ok in assuming these will also play on the sony? I am guessing that the dvd player is multi region and will automatically play region 2 as well. Am i correct?

The problem with sony dvd players are they do not play some of the duplicate cd's that are available in india otherwise they are very good.
Thats why i bought a pioneer. It simply plays everything.
