Way to go* BSNL I would say for these points...
1. Singh said about 50,000 executives and 2.50 lakh non-executive staff are participating in the strike
2. BSNL's profits plummeted to Rs 178 crore in 2009-2010 (up to December 2009) from over Rs 575 crore in 2008-09 as the PSU is rapidly losing market share to new entrants. The PSU has 91 million users, both mobile and land line
3. Besides the scrapping of the divestment plan, the unions are also demanding absorption of the 1,500 Indian Telecom Services (ITS) officers, who have been continuing on deputation for the last 10 years
4. The unions are also protesting sharing of BSNL infrastructure, including cables and towers, with private telecom companies

Way to go* = Way to go out of the business

I want to terminate my BSNL broadband subscription/connection. What is the process?

Is there a way I can do this without visiting their offices?

Does a letter sent through registered post work?

Nope, you will have to go in person and give a letter.

My experience with MTNL (which is not much better than BSNL).
1. when it works, speeds are very good.
2. frequent drops
3. unresponsive customer service (you are in the queue)
4. long time taken to repair (1-2 days).
5. impatient customer service reps (abused my wife as being incompetent).

Finally, got it disconnected in May 2009 after 3 years.

Experience with Tata Indicom
1. speeds as promised.
2. very few disconnects but even when they are, very responsive
3. fair usage conditions (also in MTNL)
3. overall very good

Y'day people from BSNL turned up (without we complaining) & asked if the telephone is working & when we said NO, they checked the wires being cut, fixed it & voila got my broadband working. Thanks to them & that was not for fixing, but for saving my Rs 2500. I was in full mood to buy a Photon+ prepaid last evening, but since BSNL started working, I've postponed the photon+ prepaid purchase for sometime now.

On Saturday, BSNL kept calling me and asking "What is your number?". This is how they test, a linesman climbing the pole or being at the distribution box and calling. My phone has been working properly. For the first time in 5 years, my broadband is not working. I haven't done anything yet since I have Reliance wireless dongle.

Not sure if you know this already, but you can even register your complaint by SMS. Send "BBF 080<your_landline_number>" to 9448077777.

I've used this service twice when i had issues, and found them resolved upon reaching back home in the evenings.

PS: If it's a landline issue, SMS to the same number, but this time the text will be "LLF 080 <your_landline_number>".

My broadband is working on an off since the last week, frequent calls to their customer care is not yielding any result :( My guess is due to the strike the guys are not attending the complaint.

I just sent an SMS to the 9448077777 number hope it works out atleast now.

@Nirmal - Write it to the highest authority by keeping all the relevant authorities of your locality in loop & I'm sure your problem will get resolved in 2-3 days.

Strike was called off the first day itself, BSNL employees are now bit scared of losing their jobs!

Did not get any call back or message from the 9448077777 line.

In state of frustration I went searching for the local area linesman & found him relaxing in the next building apartment, greased him with a 100 rs note and requested him to look into the matter,

Lo & behold, some Junior Engineer lands up an hour later at home from nowhere & checked some settings. He's promised to look into the matter & come back. Am planning to grease him too & take his number for any future problems.

Am seriously tired & frustrated of sending mails, SMS's and complaints to customer care. Have found the linesman to be of the most help

@ aargee - I did send 2 mails but did not get any response.

Thanks friend. I had received a SMS which gave this detail. I deleted it thinking I might not need it ! Thanks again.

I am using it. Speedtest reports 1.4-1.5 Mbps download and 0.35-0.4 Mbps upload. My download manager reports about 150 KBps most of the time.

Update on my broadband problem !

Finally rectified after another visit by the friendly neighborhood linesman today My strategy of buttering him paid off well ! Apparently there was some problem in the box out on the road due to the recent rains !

I still am yet to get a revert on my calls to their customer care or the mail to their CMD & local officials :( :(
