How do I charge my Dell Latitude 7490 in a car? Any chargers or adapters? Thanks in advance!

Check this

https://www.amazon.in/Belkin-F5L071a...=1&ext_vrnc=hi

Using one for past 5 years. Except for a blown fuse once, it working as intended.

Targus has one as well and it's significantly cheaper but same specs:

Vantro website also is not very confidence inspiring.

The specs also seem to good to be true. 2 sockets plus 4 USB ports. I would be very surprised all can be used without the car's fuse blowing.

200W means you can literally use maybe just 1 at a time.

Targus and Belkin are 2 known brands that can be trusted IMO.

Vantro I maybe wrong but it doesn't give the reassurance and confidence.

Agree.
And they have 3 pin AC plug points. So where is the Neutral or earthing discharging into ?

I think you have two options here:

1) Car 12v --> USB-C charger --> Laptop

2) Car 12v --> Inverter 220V --> Laptop Adapter Brick --> Laptop

The first option would be simpler, and also compatible with other devices (eg. your phone) since it's USB-C.

The key thing is that you need a minimum of 45W power delivery on USB-C in order to charge your laptop.

They usually come in 45W / 65W / 75W / 90W flavours.

The more power, the faster it will charge.

If your laptop is drawing a lot of power (eg. using your processor hardcore) the net charge might be negative at that time if the power output of the charger is not high enough -- but I don't think that's a concern in this case and hence i think 45W is enough.

Examples of 12v to USB-C 45W+ chargers:

https://www.amazon.in/GearMo-Type-C-.../dp/B072P6J47F

https://www.amazon.com/Targus-Univer...8518267&sr=8-3 (Targus link)

https://www.amazon.in/Targus-APD046A.../dp/B0095PD4VS

(Amazon USA) https://www.amazon.com/PWR-Charger-D...517299&sr=8-30

The other option is via an Invertor / Battery-Eliminator, which are the products that Sagarpadaki, Vid6639 etc have linked to above. It basically gives you an equivalent to a 220V wall-socket in your car, into which you can then plug in what you need.

Here's a much older thread on that approach (Car Battery to 220V AC convertor / inverter for charging laptop etc)

To be fair, all inverters have 3-pin plugs. It's more a question of physical compatibility than anything else.

Secondly, I'm not 100% sure on the electrical engineering, but I think it would still be possible to have that center pin earthed?

Another product with identical form factor as Vantro, this one from a brand called Sketra

One more reason to be skeptical

Just to note for others, not all laptops support charging over USB-C. A laptop needs to have a USB-C port with PD (power delivery).

The USB-C is only universal in physical port design but a royal pain with the the different standards from each company on charging and data.

To avoid overloading the electrical circuit, a UPS can also be easily kept in the boot. It should be able to charge laptop to 50% atleast.

The idea suggested by Rehaan is also good but exact electrical requirements need to be addressed.

Found an interesting product:

https://www.amazon.in/Coolnut-Macboo...dp/B07P7W9H82/

You can charge it at home and keep it in the car. Main advantage is won't strain you cars electricals.

Car chargers with ac outlets

Hi GTO,
There are car chargers with ac outlets. I use a Stanley FatMax 140W Power Inverter (single AC point, sized like a wineglass) which has worked just fine for over two years, and never blown a fuse.

I always keep a car charger with an ac outlet in my car. Its indispensable during long drives. I usually charge up my devices while I am driving, for occasionally connecting back for work from a rest areas parking.

A quick search threw up some small portable options in Amazon India:
https://www.amazon.in/Portronics-Car...640014&sr=8-17

I did not find the Stanley products in Amazon India:

At that price, why not simply carry a spare fully charged laptop battery?
