Yup. D300 body only. $ 2,200 in DXB, between $1,800 and $1,900 in Sing. Lenses are atrociously cheaper too, but am not buying any.

My setup has a 5Kg limit, but that's not the point. It is not the buckling that should worry you. If the tripod is not sturdy enough, it will start vibrating whenever a heavy camera is loaded. These vibrations are tiny, but can spoil a long tele shot. Every time you touch the camera or there is a breeze, the tripod will vibrate. Higher the load or lighter the tripod, the vibration will last longer.

I don't really understand too much of the jargon flying around here. :) I have narrowed down to two choices, the Canon S5 IS and the Panasonic TZ F18. I am being quoted a grey market price of around 15.5k and 17k respectively (over the phone).

Right now, I m inclined towards the Panny. Does anyone here have an adverse comments about it? Otherwise planning to pick it up.

Yes shopping in DXB is surely a myth. Most things are cheaper in India these days. I'm planning to pick up my HTC Touch Diamond from AirTel this time around, not buying from my regular retailer in DXB. In fact the Touch Diamond will be available in India BEFORE it is released in DXB.

get the panny FZ18. The Lecia is a good glass and the S5IS has some noise issues (I use a Canon 720IS myself which has the exact same sensor and DIGIC III processor as the S5IS).

I just upgraded my camera from a P&S camera to a NIKON D60, yet to play around with it.and I'm a noob when it comes to the DSLR terminlogy.

when I turn on the camera, it gives me the screen with all the info of how many Pics can I take, AF, Aperture, Battery. is that the sole purpose of the LCD screen apart from viewing, like a P&S camera can I look the object from the screen and take a pic instead of viewing it from the viewfinder?

Not in the D60 you cannot. D300 or D3 if you want live view (view picture on LCD and shoot) or else you should've looked at the Olympus range which has entry level SLRs with live view. A little late for that, so you need to start shooting the conventional way.

The DXB vs Singapore is an eye opener. In the sense that Iv had people complaining to me that S'pore has become expensive.

After the US, HongKong now seems to be the place for good discounts on clearance stuff....Of course hamara bharat is also throwing up a lot of surprises clap:

Anirudh, you were asking about switching to dSLR other day. Now when you look at KB ka DP episode, you get the idea.:) It will end up costing you 2-3 times of your orginal budget. Not to forget all the weight you have to lug around.

Further to my queries, guys which is the best memory card(2 GB) and batteries to source as i've finalized Canon A580? My friend said charger along with batteries pack is a good idea. What do you guys think?
