AFAIK,
Amazon does exactly the same thing. It hardly manufactures anything. It just acts as a medium to buy and sell. Or am I missing something ?!

KB100 the 40D is an excellent camera. Do not limit it with the 28-135 lens. Get the 18-55 IS and 55-250 IS lenses instead. Determine what type of photography interests you more (landscape, potrait, wildlife, sports, etc..). For kids and family the 18-55 and 55-250 will suffice till you focus on specific interests.
If and when your budget permits get the 17-55/2.8 lens and maybe a 10-22/3.5-4.5 or 70-200/4IS or 100-400/4.5-5.6 or 28/1.8 or 85/1.4 etc.
remember the 1.6 crop on the 40D makes 17mm = 28mm and 28mm = 42mm.

The difference is in reliability - Amazon can be relied upon to sell you what they say they are selling.The problem is that some of these retailers are not as reliable - similar to sellers on ebay who you need to screen on their own merits.
I use the 18-55 lens, and to be frank its pretty lousy. I suggest get the Sigma 17-70 or the Tamrom 17-55 F2.8.
As for 28-105, while on a full frame this will be good, but 28mmx1.6 FOV is not at all good for landscapes.
As for online stores, always go to resellerratings.com and check out the seller.
There are several good sellers like B&H, Adorama, 17th street photo, beachcamera etc., which offer the 40D.
So are all of you recommending that I pick up just the body? I casually asked the Coimbatore Canon Dealer for a Sigma 30mm f1.4 - and he quoted 15k . If this is true its cheaper here than getting it from the US!!
Guys .. I really need your views - buy the body locally or buy it from the US? Do the bodies sold in the US have better QC or anything like that (made in Japan??)
I am looking for digital camera since my 4+ years old FujiFilm S7000 has CCD issue. I have narrowed down to 40D canoon and few other models in 1000USD range. After studying what i have figured out is quality from cameras sold in india and USA has lot of difference.
Latest and better so called models sold in India won't come close with my 4 year old Fuji. From reputed source I came to know component used are not good here, item is manufactured for India. If you get chance buy it from USA, I am doing samething!
40D canoon is best one, you can choose few Fujifilim and Olympus as well.

Somehow I just cant believe it. They all anyways come from China/Taiwan and I dont really think they have camera batches manufactured "specific for India".

Here in India is it available in Grey? If 36K is Indian Grey price, then its actually costing similar to US prices. There the 450D kit is available for 899 USD without taxes. That comes to about 38K INR.
Is it available in Mumbai Grey Markets?

Unless I could test the camera for a few days in the US I would not buy from the US. Any camera can have problems, it is nice to be able to return it. A fellow TBHPian had hot pixels on his D300 (NIkon) he bought from the US and is stuck with the body. My first 40D has a shutter that would not open fully but I could return it as it was local (grey).
Lenses can be more problematic. You can have front/back focus issues, soft focus (the sample of the Sigma 30/1.4 I tested was soft), etc and these lenses might have to returned to the manufacturer for fixing. Often the manufacturer will ask the lens owner to send the body as well.
US prices are cheaper. The availability is better but with camera equipment unles you can test it for a few days dont bother. With the advent of digital testing is easy (use a 17"+ monitor, the 3" LCD wont show much). In the film days we used to have to wait for the prints (and pay for the prints as well).

One concluding question - Do you think there is any difference in quality at all between what is sold in India vs what is sold is US - including but not limited to different mnanufacturing bases.

I would really be grateful if anyone could ask 450D Kit's price at their favorite local grey market shop. Here in Indore I inquired and they say 38K INR.
Just want to confirm the price differential of this equipment in grey markets across our country.

I plan to pick up the 55-250 IS from R.K Tommorow, for my 40D, i just want to know how do i test the lens whether to see its a good piece and check the softness.Any particular settings i need to use? Kindly eloborate on that,
I have got a quote of Rs 11,500 for this lens and i want to make sure this is a good piece i buy. Please advice.Thank you
