Edsel, since you liked the FZ-28, why not go the same upgrade path. I am a very happy FZ-35 owner, and if I ever upgrade that camera, it will most probably be the FZ-100.
You can look at both FZ-100 and FZ-40, but since you were a FZ-28 owner, the FZ-100 makes much more sense!

Try this..

Place the camera on tripod and focus on the subject at telephoto end of your lens (say if you lens is 18-55mm, keep it at 55mm). Choose time priority and dial in to choose say 2 seconds. Press the trigger and while shutter is open for 2 seconds, slowly zoom in to the wide angle end (18mm) and hopefully you should get this effect.

18-55 was just an example.... what I meant was zoom in close to the subject, but ensure that entire key pad is in the frame, and then after opening the shutter (after pressing the trigger)slowly zoom out (away from the subject) keeping the camera as steady as possible...

Hello guys,

A friend is looking to upgrade from his current 8MP cybershot. I suggested Canon sx30 and Nikon p500. He liked the sx30. Now after reading some reviews, I see users complaining about softer images at moderate to full zoom.

Any existing users here? Is this true?

Also, since he is quite happy with his current cam IQ, will the Canon be a worthy upgrade? Any other models I can point him to.

Hay, a tip; do ask your friend to drop into CROMA / Ezone / Whizz. All these stores in Bangalore have both these camera's as display piece. It could be the same even in your friend's place. Let him actually try shooting, capturing a few shots; if request they might even let you copy pics into a USB drive. That way you can do a real world one-on-one comparison.

When I was fiddling with these 2 cameras trying to zero in on one, one thing that stood out is Canon SX30's image stabilizer is far far better than Nikon P500's in higher zooms, Canon even focused faster.

And Nikon lens makes a lot of nice focusing in and out (may be the show room piece was damaged, cudnt tell).

If your friend has real steady hands, and wont mind a couple of seconds delay in focusing, I feel P500 is the way to go.

Thanks Spinnerr about the advice. I suggested the same thing. Problem is, there aren't many in his hometown, Srinagar. He will be visiting Delhi for a couple of days and wants to pick up the cam from there.

Which one did you go in for, finally?

Folks am back, i know its been months since i posted in last, it was hard for me to decide if a super soom suits me or an slr after pondering a lot i have finally made up my mind to pick d90:)

FujiHS20 gave a close fight but the picture quality is something which put me down..

Fujifilm HS10, Panasonic FZ40 , Canon SX30 IS , Nikon P500 ,are regarded as among the better superzooms , though Nikon's P&S range is not as good relative to Canon/Panasonic. Second rung of superzooms has Fujifilm S4000 and S3300/S2950, Nikon L120 , Canon SX130 IS

If long zoom is not so much of a priority, Canon S90/95 or G11/G12 , Olympus XZ-1 or Panasonic LX5 have larger image sensors for better image quality, at the expect of zoom range.
