That's a good one, yes it's true Sony doesn't have 250Gb microvault drives. The max I think was around 16GB.

If you want 500GB you'll have to go in for the powered external drives, I got one for 750GB from western digital, it's called Western Digital MyBook.

Pretty handy and comes in a neat case with a power supply. This is kept on your desk for handy data transfer and backups.

My Book Overview

I keep a separate 120Gb seagate freeagent drive for portable use.
I know. Thats why might get 320 gb now.
How much did you shelled out for it?
And hows the performance till now?

I picked the 750GB MyBook in the US via amazon.com and got it for around 143$ (Discounted price), the original price was approx 270$.

It's now available for 114$ on Amazon incase you know someone who's coming down from the US. Amazon doles out some very good discounts.

Amazon.com: Western Digital 750GB My Book Essential USB 2.0 External Hard Drive, WDH1U7500N: Electronics

In terms of performance I find it pretty decent and it's spot on comparable to the "Seagate Freeagent Go" USB harddrive that I have. All these drives would normally be limited to the max USB2.0 transfer rate of approx 480Mbits (theoretical), in reality I guess they give around 350-400Mbits (if I'm not mistaken). Another good thing with this drive is that it comes with a 16Mb buffer.

There are some new Seagate drives in the market upto 1.5 tb. Prices are low too. 1 tb costs £110. Looks have improved also.

Croma prices are marginally higher than places like Reliance.

Picked up the 320 GB WD Passport for 117 USD (buy.com). Black colour... just started using it. Great VFM, and you can't beat the portability!

Sorry to post a dumb question (I am totally non-technical) - what makes an external hard drive "really good". That is, how do you judge its goodness. I recently bought a 160 gb WD. How do I know if it's good or bad or average? I mean what are the parameters that one should check? Also, how does one find out the crash-proofness of a hard drive?
Sorry if this is a dumb question.

Hi. Does any one have problems like me with a WD Passport Drive.

I have a 250 GB model, bought it 5 months back. It used to work earlier and i transferred lots of stuff onto it. But now it keeps coming up as USB device not recognised.

I have tried all sorts of things like uninstalling the device driver etc. but it still does not work. Meanwhile my friends who bought 160 GB passports are all happy as they work fine.
