You are right Navin, portability is required.

Do you know how much a Altec Lansing IM7 sells for in India? Prices on the net are around 150$ (Rs 6000) which is dead cheap compared to the Bose ones.

Also they have a IM9 which looks more compact. Dont think it has a sub-woofer like the IM7. Any views on this?

Perhaps your uncle can also evaluate the BOSE desktop speakers which retail for far lesser (Approx about 5k) and are called Companion 2. I use them with my IPOD and also have a BOSE sound Dock. Personally I feel a IPOD with a dock with remote and the companion speakers are great and the flexibility of the remote is also there !!!

Friends, can any one advise me regarding buying Bose Multimedia speakers? I am planning to buy it from Muscat/Dubai, there is an offer for companion III series, no offer for companion 5. Any marked difference between the two?
Does it have an ipod dock?

Any other comparable/better brands available?

Please do enlighten me. Thanks in advance.

Sound Dock OR Sound Bar OR Other Suggestions?

Hello everyone!

I am currently in a bit of confusion regarding an AV System for my room. My room is around 200 sq feet and I am looking for a single component AV System which means that a proper 5.1 Home Theater System is out of the question due to lack of space.

The purpose of this system is to comfortably enjoy rich sound for music and movies. I use my iPod for music and movies are usually downloaded from the net in high quality and watched through a laptop or USB. However, having a Blue Ray player wouldn't hurt. I am also thinking of using a PS3 as my Blue Ray player but not sure if a USB can be connected through it to watch movies.

I am now confused whether a Sound Bar or Sound Dock would suit my purpose. I have heard the Bose SoundDock 10 but was not happy with the over all performance. The bass also lacked punch and so I was not totally convinced whether it would satisfy my needs. Now, there is alot of talk and good reviews of the B&W Zeppelin Air which has been recommended by many of my friends. But my main concern is whether a Sound Dock is good enough for movies. Here is where the Sound Bar option comes in.

I need help and guidance on the above to make the right choice.

You can check out sound bars from Boston Acoustics, JBL, Polk Audio. Or if you can accomodate two small bookshelf speakers then check out Audioengine.

Thank you for suggestions. I am skeptical about book shelves as I would like to use that space for something else. Hence looking for a compact / single component system. Where in Mumbai are these brands available?

Re: Sound Dock OR Sound Bar OR Other Suggestions?

Has anyone heard the new soundbar from sonodyne. I heard it the last time I was in Kolkata at the listening room in South City mall and was blown away by it. It is also cheap compared to Bose (19K AFAIK). Audition it . Sonodyne was the baap of all Hi Fi Syatems in india till Japanese manufactures took over. They are on the resurgence right now.

I have a JBL soundbar at home and I have to say that it is pretty impressive. Excellent VFM.

The one I have at home is this.

Re: Sound Dock OR Sound Bar OR Other Suggestions?

I was in a similar dilemma a couple of months ago. I checked out the BOSE SoundDock II and was not happy with the sound either. JBL was more show than go.

I came across and picked up the Yamaha MCR 040 and really liked the way it sounded and was built. clean and simple and good value.
