Well, it's not as 'simple' as you make it out to be. There are costs involved and having seen iProduct repair bills believe me they are nothing to be sneezed at. But I admit it's probably better to change the battery than to run out and spend a small fortune on a new model.
One could attempt the repair at home but given the complexities of getting the right tools, possessing the right skills and authentic replacement parts its best left to the pros. And this comes from a person, yours truly, who is pretty hands on and familiar with electronic/electrical repairs among other things.

The fact that 5S got slower with iOS 11 is simply because of the age of the product. Also re-inforced by the fact that officially it has been discontinued.

The aging factor applies to batteries more than any other component in the phone. And the reason they throttle the processor and sub systems is supposedly because the battery cannot supply the amps and/or voltage required by the CPU to deliver optimal performance. Given this is a recent change in iOS' power management daemon it also smells like a deliberate drive to encourage customers to upgrade or spend $$ on a new battery. I don't believe Apple will win over customers this way.
On the other hand, if an older discontinued model doesn't have the hardware grunt to carry a heavier OS, (and OSes do get heavier over time) Apple should not offer that upgrade.

Yeah & I can imagine my <1 year old IP 7+ will soon feel like its running on mollasses and in slow-motion should I keep it beyond the 1-2 year mark. I am not amused.

I know it's not very simple. Especially in India where as far as I know, apple doesn't even offer battery repair service. But yes, a more rational thing to do than get a new phone. I guess it's got more to do with the itch to upgradelol:
And the 6, 6s and SE got this policy change since 10.2 , so the 5S if affected should have been done earlier. And iOS 11 is the last upgrade for the 5S anyway.
The 7 plus should be better off than 5s thanks to the more relative could upgrade yearly and the more RAM. IMO an iPhone can be smoothly used for 3 years starting with its release date. Any more and you have to settle for a less than flagship experience. Had to sell a 5S last year when the 7 was launched.

I'd like to know if anyone here has got a battery replacement done on their iPhones and what does it cost. In the US it seems to be $79+ taxes and repair charges, if its anything near sub 10k in India, that's the best thing to do after two years if you feel your phone has become unusable instead of going out and spending nearly a lakh on the new launches  |
I checked with an iPhone service centre in Bombay for my Wife's 6s Plus since the battery was acting temperamental.
They ran a diagnostics check and informed me the battery was good for 3-4 months at least and all other parameters were fine. I saw the screen myself as the technician was doing it and he was not giving me crap.
Now comes the kicker:) if the battery dies then Apple would replace it at a cost of rupees 10 thousand and if I asked for a replacement now it would cost me 20 thousand. This was policy and there was no arguing with it however stupid it sounds.
The phone is doing fine as of now, no slowing down noticed, except the battery drains faster.
Cheers

Yikes! Is the phone under warranty? Rs 10K if the battery fails, here I assume the 10K charge because it's like a pro-rata warranty similar to the ones you get with lead-acid batteries. But 20K?!
I mean think of this, we car owners grumble if we have to replace vehicle batteries, many a times costing less than an iPhone battery, in <3 years. It does not apply to the luxury marques of course. With those cars 25K and higher for a sealed AGM battery is par for the course.
Makes me feel my iPhone 7+ will soon turn into a sluggish white elephant in the next couple of years. BTW, my OP5 (running Oreo) is snappier to use than the iPhone.

Over time the # of charge/discharge cycles expended will reduce capacity. That's normal.
But some tips; make sure you keep that phone cool whilst charging and try and charge between 40-80% as much as possible. Li-ions don't like being charged to 100% or discharged to 0% frequently.

Thanks R2D2 for the information.
The phone has completed two years now. Apple makes this kind of ridiculous policy because they want people to buy their new products every year.
Cheers

I hope this 'We know best' policy is set aside post the fiasco, why penalise the customer just because he disagrees with your assessment ? Replace and charge them as required. Also, 10k sounds just about right to me considering how expensive these phones are to buy. Let's see what comes out of this over the next few months or if it ends up in a out of court settlement and nothing changes.

I had gone for a battery replacement a couple of years ago when i had the iPhone 5. The service centre told me that they do not replace batteries and they will provide me with a new phone at a cost which i dont remember now. Currently have the iPhone 7 (Red) and i guess this will be my last apple device.
Anybody facing any difficulties with google map off late?
I'm on iOS version 11.2.1 and Google map version 4.42, both of them are up to date. The problem I face with Google map is after searching for a location and direction my app crashes the moment I press start navigation, even I've tried a restart and it doesn't helps.
Cheers!
Guys, how much will an October 2016 iPhone 7 (32GB) fetch me approximately ?

Rough estimate for your phone.
Has anyone experienced the error message while using the native maps app in iPhone7 saying directions not available for this destination? This keeps showing up for any location I choose. Maps not supported in India??

Navigation is not supported in Apple Maps in India. Not sure why they even have the map data loaded! Its completely useless.

Check out
www.cashurcell.com they usually offer better prices than cashify and sahi value etc.
I sold 3 phones today to a dealer that was linked with cashify. My friend sold a phone to him via cashiy and got his number directly as he promised to offer 500 to 1000rs more than cashify pricing.
With the way apple slows down its phones I decided to get rid of them before they become dead weight as many of my phones have in the past. Got the following resale prices for my 3 phones:
iphone6 64gb - 14k
iphone 5s 16gb - 6k
iphone 5c 8gb - 4k
Do try and keep your phone's boxes intact as resale value does go up a bit with these small bits. out of the above only one phone was without box but all were in decent condition with few scratches on the sides/rear.

The person you sold to is associated with cashurcell or both are different?
Interesting findings on apple's mean ways splurging over the net. I too am keeping a watch on the proceedings and will take a call a year or 2 down the line, when I need to replace my phone.
Not so keen on changing as that would mean huge changes like
1) All 4 in family on iPhones,so lots of lightning cables lying around.
2) 2 Apple watches.
3) Apple Music subscription.
4) 1 Macbook Pro user
And personally I am way more comfortable with the dumbed down but always reliable iOs. My sister in the US changed to a Galaxy S7 after years of iPhone usage, last year and is waiting for her 2 year contract to end and shift back. The hardware has slowed down and she is frustrated with Samsung. Interface is manageable for her.
I'm really not amused by the way Apple has screwed its customers over by sabotaging their devices without the owners permission. There has to have been a commercial angle to this.
Unfortunately iOS upgrade/update change logs do not contain the full list of changes or only have passing vague remarks like "improved performance" "bug fixes" or "battery life".
Apple, thanks for turning me off your phones. And dare I say it..may be permanently. I'll get rid of my IP7+ when it crosses the 2 year mark and stick to buying Androids like the Pixel or Note from now on. Sad because I do like my iPhone.
