Hi !

Can you tell us the brand/model you bought?

If possible, please provide us the link.

Thanks.

Edit: Guys, what is the ideal screen size for Civic / Swift ?

Buy from China / HK and have it shipped to US. Or get it shipped to India.

You would get decent PND for $100. Completely unlocked and quite hack friendly.

Got mine last week from dealextreme. Paid $119 (including shipping) for PND and it has bluetooth that takes care of handsfree calls.

I was able to run mapmyindia/garmin/satuide in less than an hour on that PND.

Yup. That was unlocking. I guess all dealextreme deals come locked and one has to go through the unlocking process.

@mukeshgoel - AFAIK, there aren't any brands for dealextreme sets. You guessed it - one has to take chances. But so far I have not heard anyone complain about them. You just have to go through the procedure which Netfreak explained for unlocking.

In Mios case you can either do what you did and get up windows CE
Not sure if this would be called unlocking since its mentioned specifically on dealextremese site itself.

And process requires just creation of a file with a specific name on root directory of SD card.

And even without that, there is an option in UI itself to switch to a diferent GPS program that has been copied to SD card.

This brand is 'YF' basically no name.

Bought this one : DealExtreme: $119.70 5.0" LCD 372MHz CPU Windows CE 5.0 Bluetooth + GPS Navigator with 2GB Maps SD Card and FM Radio

It boasts of video player / Mp3 player etc etc but all that is useless. CPU / RAM is not enough for those things.

GPS and Handsfree calling (with bluetooth) work fine.

DX has detailed instructions on setting up this PND any which way :

Thanks for the link NFB. Did you have to face any trouble at the customs? Was $119 the final price shipped to India?

I assume this is a no-brand Chinese make? Any idea of reliability? At that price point, a Mio C320 makes a better sense na, because its a decent brand and can be unlocked as well.

P.S. Can you please PM me your number? I saw your post on another forum regarding Garmin Mobile XT on Nokia E71. I am having troubles installing it and would like to speak to you for clarifications.

No issues with customs. Price included shipping. Since price is below 10k no duty was applicable. DX marks shipment as "Gift".

Yes Mio C320 would be better in terms of peace of mind. And you have someone you can hold responsible for warranty in case of issues.

DO Keep receipts with you while coming back to India to avoid customs issues at airport.

Only advantage of Chinese unit is features (Bluetooth, 5 inch screen, USB Host)

I will post details on this Chinese PND later.

So with a usb host, it multiplies the possiblilities of plugging in media (audio, video). How is the performance of this? Would make a very good carputer lite.

I hope someone picks up this one to offer a phone/PDA

Performance of Video player is pathetic. Audio is ok.

Don't think this unit has much juice for Video. Copied some Tintin videos and playback was jerky.

USB host does expand the horizon in terms of:
  1. WiFi (In fact DX sells WiFi for this Unit)
  2. Data logging
  3. (Maybe) if unit has enough power then logging ECU data

Sorry to go a bit OT: I just saw on eBay India there is some Halox GPS for 20k, its a Car navigator. I want to know, can we install a touch Screen AV + A gps in a car.

Imeanwhat people install in cars as a 5" screen in dash for Videos, can it be AV+GPS? Any good brand?

Even the Mio can take in SD Wifi Cards. However I suppose with the chinese unit such stuff is easier.

Yes Chinese Unit is easier to hack for things like WiFi since they gladly send you info on adding drivers etc to WinCE and its easy to unbrick.

Disadvantage is warranty issues.

If anything fails than you either have to send it back to DX or order spares. Though spares are cheap. it would take 3 weeks for shipping.
