I know I don't need to export the contacts from Outlook. Its just that aren't any contacts in Outlook. All of them have been saved in the Contacts folder which is for Windows Mail, not Outlook. And I think the software provided with the phone sync contacts only from MS Outlook, and not Outlook Express or Windows Mail. Because of this I was trying to get the contacts imported into Outlook. Windows Mail exports in two formats, VCF and CSV. VCF cannot be imported all at once and has to be done one-by-one. CSV on the other hand gives an error saying that a particular Outlook component is not installed, and hence the import stops. :(

Might not be to Outlook, because when I open Outlook and look in the Contacts, its empty.

The active sync software will be in the CD attached and also can be downloaded for free from microsoft site.

Before you do anything see if inside the active sync (once you connect the phone) under advanced option if you can select other clients. I know that it has for Outlook express but not sure about Win mail. If windows mail is there then it will be straight forward job.

One more clarification, you mentioned error while trying to export Csv, which is nothing but a comma separated value, stored mostly in excel format. So do you have the MS office package installed in the laptop, word, excel etc? Just wild trouble shooting.

Yes, I have MS Office package installed. The export of a CSV file containing contacts from Windows Mail is succesful. The problem is with Outlook importing this file. There is an MS Outlook component required for this import which strangely isn't installed by default. And this buggers up the import. I tried the procedure for installing this component, but it requires the original Office installation disc, which I don't have.

If I ever make friends with someone who works for the R&D department of Microsoft Windows or Office, I will make sure that I make him carry around a CD for every time he wishes to communicate with me.

Second part i think the original installation was not done properly, since i clearly remember i never installed anything additional for importing Csv in my laptop. (I have a copy of my address book as Csv for back up ). Which ver of MS office are you using?

I do agree its frustrating with MS asking for CD and stuff, but its there desperate attempt at curbing piracy.

Ok one more try here, did you try if Active sync can sync from outlook express? If so try exporting the win address book to outlook express. It has similar export option in it.

Does Nokia Software allows different user profiles?

The reason I am asking is because both me & wifey have Nokia & while I like to synch same calendar entries from Windows Calendar I do not want to have same contacts in bothe the phones which is what the software did last time I tried to take a back up & then sync of wifey's phone's contact list, she got all of my contact too in this process most of which were duplicate & not needed, thankfully her contacts were on sim & the new ones on Phone memory so it was easy to remove them.

Will check. I also think it's the same. Has the same logo as Active Sync, with the green round thing. Just that the interface is different, and I do not remember reading 'Active Sync', hence the hesitation in confirming.

Isn't Windows Mail the new substitute for Outlook Express for Vista?

Btw, I still haven't understood the logic of having MS Outlook and Outlook Express co-existing when they do nearly the same things wrt email, and are products of the same group!

Q9h is windows mobile standard edtion, not professional.

What it basically means is that it's not a touchscreen phone, unlike most other windows mobile devices. Do keep that in mind before going for it.

The active sync equivalent for windows vista is called "windows mobile device center". Yes, it does have a round, green icon. Check if you have that installed.

If you still have access to your old phone, using "microsoft phone data manager beta" will help you sync your contacts, calendar and more easily.
It will also make an online backup of all these, which can be used to restore to phones from a wide variety of manufacturers like nokia, sony ,htc motorola etc. Brilliant piece of work, this software.

Nope. It will sync with any contacts database on a Windows based system - you need to configure the options for Contacts when you set up ActiveSync (or whatever its called on Vista) for the first time. You can also change the options later. You can use the Contacts DB in Outlook, Outlook Express or Windows Mail.

You will always have them synced with your windows live account, and no matter if you lose your laptop or your phone, you will still have all your contacts !!

Even this wouldn't work for me. Installed the software, and ran it from the phone. When I tried to import the zipped and renamed 'Contacts' file, it says invalid format.

Now onto the last resort - Downloading an entire Office 2003 installation disc. Will use it to install whatever missing tools are required for Outlook to import .csv, and will sync.

Yes, it does. One can specify to the PC Sync which phone uses which local profile. I have the same situation - just that my wife won't have anything to do with backups and such 'bothersome details' that would require her to work on a PC (she is a PC hater).

Buuuuttttt... it is on the Windows side that things become messy. Both Win Mail / Outlook Express, as well as Outlook, are very temperamental when it comes to allowing you to bring up the UI with the profile that YOU would like to use in a session (without changing logon). I normally succeed once in 10-15 tries, and I am yet to see a sureshot method to do that. Works with separate logons though.

The internal file formats *are different* between the Win95 vintage Win Mail / Outlook Express, and the more recent (can't call it modern) Office format (used by Outlook client).

If you are getting MSO2003, do a clean reinstall (uninstall the old installation completely, then redo the WHOLE 9 yards once again - this time choosing Custom and specifying what all you need apart from the suggested parts). Redoing a few parts will give you even more nightmares and leave your PC in a mess.

Just saw this, i had a similar dilemma earlier. I used MS Outlook and created separate subfolder for the second phone/address book and mapped it to the 2 phones and it worked well.

So check if Nokia's sync support folders to be specified from MS Outlook.

Even if it doesnt, another way out is, though lil manual process:

Create back up of each of the address book as separate folders. Ctrl A>CtrlC> and move it to the main Add book folder Ctrl A>CtrlV and sync, and then reverse the process and have a manual back up
