I read an article in today's paper that installation of windows 7 is a bit complicated, not that I'm planning on doing it myself, but any suggestions as to where I can get this OS update in Bangalore? Or should I just approach the acer service centre?

Of the three, my pick will be lenovo.
Asus, just settling down in india, after sale support is picking up
Samsung, a well established brand, but not in Laptops. They have very good optical drives, monitors and HDDs. But thats not a reason to go for it.
Lenovo, previously known as IBM, is very good in terms of design, performance and durability.

thanks for your opinion but this is to be bought for use in USA. after an year it would be used in India. so i guess after sales won't matter much.

i am more concerned with related to performance, weight, battery life and ease of keyboard

i was searching around and apparently a couple of interesting newcomers have been added.
i saw Samsung n140 which is new in market with good specs.
also Lenovo s 10 - 2 have come, major improvement being a 6-cell battery.

Hey Guys,

I am looking at picking up a good multimedia laptop for my designers (web) and I was looking at the Dell Studio 17.3

What are my alternatives? Is this the best bet for a multimedia design machine? This is ringing about 65k on my register. So I need to make sure I am making the right decision.

Help?

Please help me buy a lappy!!!

I am planning to buy a new laptop. I have shortlisted an Asus (NVG 81) and HP laptop (DV6-2005). the specs are:

Asus (NVG 81)
  • Core 2 Duo P8700 2.53GHz
  • 4GB DDR-2 800MHzRAM
  • 320GB HDD
  • Graphics NVDIA GT120M(1GB) graphics
  • 14" HD LED display
  • Price uae dhs-4000 (INR 50995)
HP laptop (DV6-2005)
  • AMD Turion II Ultra Dual Core M600 2.4GHz
  • Level 2 cache 2MB
  • 4GB DDR-3 RAM
  • 500GB 7200rpm HDD
  • ATI Radeon HD4660 1 GB dedicated graphics
  • 15.6" Diagonal HD LED Brightview Display
  • Price uae dhs- 3700 (INR 47170)
I will be using the laptop as a desktop replacement and will be using it for playing games also. The ASUS is more expensive than the HP and has only DDR2 ram.

But I heard that the AMD Turion II ULTRA is not all that great compared to C2D and heats up very fast as TDP is 35w. I am unable to find any information (review) about this processor in the net. So could anyone please help me out on choosing between the two.

Whereas C2D P8700 is 34th!! - Notebookcheck: Mobile Processors - Benchmarklist

But since P8700 is penryn, you wont be able to use DDR3 ram in ASUS like in the HP one
Thanks dude!!! you have been of great help. After I went through the HP website I seriously have doubt about the DDR3 RAM part also, so I have sent the shop guys an email requesting clarification.

Here is the link for the 2 laptops

HP- HP DV6

ASUS- N81VG

sir, dont ask us. go to the right gaming forums. find out from guys there how AMD works. These global benchmarks are like bikinis - they hide all the critical areas while being seemingly tell-it-all

As i have always said now and before. Please stay away from Lappy that have AMD+nvidia or ATI combo.

They will last as long as their warranties.

Mobos are very badly made especially HP ones.

You mean to say that AMD processors are the common trouble. I was looking at HP only because it looked more VFM. Does anyone know how is ASUS service in south India.

I agree with SirAlec

Moreover HP's after-sales is total BS here in India(my personal experience + some of my friends)

ASUS offers international warranty!
IMO any ASUS showroom can guide you to the service centre!

Only decent gaming capable laptops (~ price of the laptops you linked)I could find there are -

- Toshiba Satellite A500-134 (no international warranty though!)
- ASUS G50V (on the expensive side! but international warranty available)

That's not always true. I bought a Compaq AMD+Nvidia laptop in 2007 and its still working fine.
