Re: The Laptop Thread: Configs, deals & questions

Thank you so much @bijims for the suggestions. Well, I literally don't even know the L of laptops. So my assumptions might be wrong. I've heard that HP laptops are more reliable than Asus, Acer, Dell, Lenovo etc. and A$$ of HP is better than the others. So my first preference is HP.

My requirement for a laptop which can handle all college duties (AutoCAD), fulfill my itch for gaming, be reliable and have a good battery backup.

This one has a very weak Graphics card(GPU) and will not satisfy your gaming itch.

Go for this one-

https://www.amazon.in/dp/B0CGV5JRSK?...ogi&th=1&psc=1

https://gaming.unboxparadigm.com/p/l...b00v5in-0834a/

This one has an 8 core CPU and a proper GPU(RTX 3050). Lenovo is considered to be the best in gaming, much better than HP. And IMO, HP being more reliable than Lenovo may have been the case a decade back.

You can also go for this one if 60k is the hard limit-

https://www.amazon.in/dp/B0B7RXL89Z?...ogi&th=1&psc=1

https://gaming.unboxparadigm.com/p/l...in-2021-39b01/

You can use this site to filter out the laptops as per your requirement-

https://gaming.unboxparadigm.com/

If HP is what you want, go for this one-

Limited-time deal: HP Victus Gaming Laptop, AMD Ryzen 5 5600H, 4GB RTX 3050 GPU, 15.6-inch (39.6 cm), FHD, IPS, 144Hz, 16GB DDR4, 512GB SSD, Backlit KB, B&O, 9ms response time, Dual speakers (Blue, 2.37 kg), fb0106AX https://amzn.in/d/06nwciX0

One advantage of the HP is that it has more RAM. But, it has lower powered GPU(75w vs 85w on Lenovo).

Re: The Laptop Thread: Configs, deals & questions

Since several people are recommending Lenovo LOQ series on this thread, just a word of caution.

Several reports of motherboard failure are coming out, especially in the Intel-based 2024 models in the LOQ series. A quick search on Google and YouTube with key words "LOQ motherboard issue" will throw you several links. It seems Lenovo has become reluctant to replace these laptops and issue refund (seems initially they did)

So, please check and take an informed decision.

If you

Re: The Laptop Thread: Configs, deals & questions

Hello Bhpians,

I am in the market for a new laptop for my work needs which I will be buying myself by using my firms laptop policy. I work in a tax consultancy firm and the only power hungry task that I can imagine of encountering is heavy excel work. Additionally, it should be able to handle software's like Tally and Winman without any issues. This laptop can be used by me personally as well and therefore I intend to use it for occasional media consumption (no gaming or editing). Ideally I would have picked up the MacBook M2 Air as it would hold up for a long time and is also currently available for a good deal. However, my heavy reliance on MS excel and software's that are not available on macOS like Tally swayed me away from Mac's. However, if anyone else having my similar use case is using a Mac, please enlighten me as my knowledge in this regard is minimal.

Assuming that getting a MacBook is not plausible I am now looking at Windows options. For a Windows laptop my budget is around Rs.60,000. During my search I came across the model - Acer Swift Go 14 - which is an Intel Evo certified laptop with an OLED screen and an i5 13500H processor for 57k, https://www.flipkart.com/acer-swift-...01721294497481 . This looks like a sweet deal on paper. I would like to know if anyone has hands on experience with this laptop and whether its a good buy since some of the reviews point out excessive heating and low battery life (I have read 'H' series processors are power hungry, not sure though). Low battery life is not a big issue as my usage will be mostly plugged in. I am also open to other options in this price range. I am more inclined towards getting a compact laptop. Any pointers would be highly appreciated.

I have been using Lenovo for ages (it was IBM previously). Their build is quite good and at least in Delhi service is excellent.

Re: The Laptop Thread: Configs, deals & questions

Guys, need some assistance here.

My son is starting his Bachelors' in Design at RVU (Bangalore) and as part of the UG requirements, he would need a laptop with the following configuration below:

"Product Design students who want to design products mostly use Blender, Rhinoceros, and Fusion 360, and can buy Windows laptops such as HP, Dell, and Lenovo with 32GB RAM, 1 TB Hard Disk, Intel i7 processor & Nvidia Graphics Card."

His current HP laptop does not fit the above requirement and I have to get him a new one. Can anyone suggest specifically which make/model I can explore? Any pointers would help as I may have to decide shortly on the buy. Thanks.

Please be wary of buying Intel 13th/14th gen PCs at this time. There seems to be an issue of performance/stability. Stick to the 12th gen, they are significantly cheaper as well.

Wow, its nice to see the open source and powerful app Blender is making its way in the mainstream education. I used 3DS Max for more than a decade before switching onto Blender in 2014-15 for my profession and found it to be far more powerful and more open.

Although I never found laptops to be comfortable to work in such powerful graphics apps but the portability is a must for the students so usage of laptop can't be avoided. Laptops with such high end specs cost fortune, and desktops even more.

Although laptops from all top brands are good. I would suggest to look at Asus Zenbook Pro series, they have some dual screen setups which allow to expand the software tools and panels in the second screen so that the wide portion of the main screen remains free for the graphics/model/diagrams etc where the user is working.

Zenbook series is military grade certified and come with metal chassis so their durability is not questionable. I am using a Zenbook flip OLED model for presentations and occasional sketching which I bought in 2022. Though my laptop usage is very minimal and I am careful person, still going by the record of my past laptops, I am satisfied with the build quality of this laptop.

They have also implemented the numpad in the trackpad which diminishes the need of dedicated numpad on the size resulting into reducing the size and weight of the traditional laptop with similar specs.

Display color accuracy also becomes important in the design field so laptop having a color accurate display with wider color range is recommended.

I am not sure how much important the 3D rendering part will be in the course. If its fairly important then look for a laptop with a GPU having maximum possible VRAM in the latest RTX generation. For the CPU, you can also consider equivalent AMD.

If you decide on Asus then I would strongly recommend you and your son to check them in person at your nearest Asus exclusive store and see if the ergonomics suite your son. You can also pick the single screen variant if you don't find any advantage in the the dual screen.

I would suggest Lenovo Thinkpad series. They are much more robust and the screen rocks. Further AMD processors have a slight edge over Intel.

or

you can add 16GB RAM later.

I needed a laptop/desktop with similar specifications last year for AI. Primary requirement was a better CPU and a Nvidia GPU with at least 4 GB. After a lot of search I bought a MSI Gaming laptop with I7 CPU with Nvidia RTX 3050 GPU. I upgraded it to 64 GB RAM and 1 TB NVMe.

I suggest that you can try gaming laptops with similar configuration. Here is an example:HP Victus

Don't compromise on CPU and GPU. Memory and drive can be easily upgraded. And for running problematic software you would be better off with Intel chips. We have AMD and Intel chips in our office computers. In our AI applications, Intel runs cooler and throws fewer tantrums with module compatibility.

Most of the games use Integer Arithmetic for faster response, in contrast CAD and AI use floating point arithmetic. So I would do a benchmark comparison test on Gaming Machines vs Mobile Workstations before selecting a machine.

In today's world of parallel processing more CPU would give faster processing. So it is wise to choose the CPU with most processors that is affordable.

Here is one comparison. There are many more

Depends on the processor and the generation.
So as in your case you have to study the benchmarks on the net for the particular laptop configuration.
In most cases AMD chips have more CPU and in many cases higher clock rate. The advantage keeps going back and forth between AMD and Intel.
