It was actually a new naming scheme introduced by intel last year to simplify their product range. This was not a direct one to one name change - so it is super confusing for now.

Considering just the Laptop processors from intel:

Earlier we used to have intel Core i3, core i5, core i7 and core i9 series with each having different sub series like U, P, H etc. based on whether it is aimed more at efficiency, balance or Performance.

Now we have Intel Core and Intel Core Ultra Processors.

Intel Core has both series 1 and series 2 range of processors based on the launch date and is aimed more at casual users. There is Core 3, Core 5, Core 7 and Core 9 they also have sub category like U, H etc.

Intel Core Ultra (part of series 2) is relatively more powerful and has core ultra 5, 7 and 9 with sub divisions again like U, H, V etc.

There is also an N series aimed at the budget segment, but I don't even want to go there. It is already confusing enough.

Coming to your question, the Core 7 150 U processor in the screenshot is aimed more at efficiency, it will be worse in terms of performance compared to 14th gen intel Core i7 HX series processors. But instead if it was a series 2 Core 7 or core 7 Ultra H SKU processor, it might be more powerful.

Thanks for detailed information

I was exploring HP laptops and saw core 7 series on US websites but don't find it on Indian websites. Is it not yet launched in India?

HP might have not launched Intel Core Series laptops in India, I saw a laptop from Dell (Inspiron 5640) on sale with that chipset. But hp does sell many models with Core Ultra Series 2 processors which is significantly better. I've seen reviews that the new Core Ultra Processors are almost as efficient as Apples M3 processor in running day-to-day tasks.

Re: The Laptop Thread: Configs, deals & questions

If you want a CD100(Fill it, shut it, forget it) of laptops, Macbook air is the best contender. Stellar battery, extremely lightweight and a great screen. The M2 & M3 processors are leagues ahead in stability and thermal performance. In short, they simply work!

For heavier usage, Pro series with M4 & M4 Max are the ones to go.

Apple ecosystem and hardware is miles ahead of Windows and the peace of mind is absolutely stunning. No crashes, no blue screen, no driver issues, great support, seamless updates and an amazing price to performance ratio.

I have been using mac's since 2014 and Im never going back. My gaming needs are very well taken care of by xbox and that's the way IMO it should be when looking at a professional machine.

If your workflow involves mandatory usage of Windows, then you might want to take a look at some of the contenders like:

- Dell XPS series
- Microsoft Surface Laptop 7
- Asus Zenbook S 16
- HP Envy x360
- Lenovo Yoga Book 9i

HP has launched many Intel Core Series(Series 1) Laptops in India but only a few Series 2 laptops.
If you want check current laptops being sold in IN you can check on https://www.smartprix.com/laptops

Apple designs their own chips and macOS is developed in tandem with Apple’s hardware, allowing Apple to fine-tune the OS to maximize the hardware’s capabilities. Features like memory compression, efficient task scheduling, and optimized energy usage are tailored to the specific hardware. The seamless integration minimizes compatibility issues and overhead, leading to better performance and battery life.
AND Apple uses ARM chips like the ones in your phones which further increases their efficiency as they consume less power compared to x86 chips used by current Windows Laptop makers.

While Windows is designed to run on a wide array of hardware configurations from multiple manufacturers like Intel, AMD. This results in more processor options and price points, making Windows laptops accessible to a broader audience. However, this diversity can introduce inefficiencies, as Microsoft cannot fine-tune Windows to every specific hardware configuration. Despite this, advancements in x86 processors like AMD Ryzen and Intel's hybrid architecture have closed the efficiency gap, offering competitive performance in areas such as gaming, multi-threaded tasks, and specialized workflows.

It has listing of "i" series and ultra series processors. No the core series (like core 5, core 7) which are available in the USA for example. That's the reason of my original post regarding its availability in India.

Oh, I thought about the Core Ultra Series not the Core Series (Intel naming scheme ).
I have checked and neither Smartprix nor Amazon and Flipkart have filters for Core 3,5,7 series Laptops but they sell a few of them in their websites.

For the Core Ultra Series 2, there are only a few available.

If people can wait for some considerable amount of time (maybe Q3), AMD just launched their new chips Should dominate everything and have a chip for every use case -
And if someone wants a laptop right now, the most bang for the buck, which can do some good gaming - Colorful Evo P15 with 6GB RTX 4060

Re: The Laptop Thread: Configs, deals & questions

After moving to Bhopal, I was on the lookout for a used laptop since my previous Acer was acting up and I will get a new one in 2 -3 years anyways. Light reliable laptops were what I looked for since those were the things I missed the most on my Acer. Finally ordered a thinkpad t480 (refurbished) from Amazon and it will arrive within a week.

I want to know if anyone has had any experience with refurbished laptops from Amazon and what are the things I should look out for when it arrives. This will purely be a stand in laptop for 2 years but the amount paid, while relatively less, cannot be written off if this thing gives up on me. Also, where I can get spare parts in case something crops up after the warranty period ends?

Thanks in advance folks.

You can see this video on what things to check for when buying a used laptop.

I guess there is nothing to do if you have already ordered the laptop. But before buying, you should have done some research:

1) Read all the 1 star and 2 star reviews. Even now you can read them to get an idea about issues you can expect.
2) Find out whom to contact if laptop refuses to start or there is a display issue on day 1. Amazon or the refurbisher?
3) It will usually have 6 month warranty. After 3 months, if there is an issue, whom to contact? Amazon or the refurbisher? Does the refurbisher have a service center in your city?

After warranty period, just type "laptop repair <cityname>" and take your laptop to the closest center. You can also go to Lenovo service center in your city.

The Laptop Thread: Configs, deals & questions-tbhp.jpg

I am getting this message now from Microsoft. Seems like another attempt at getting me to buy a new laptop? Mine is 10 years old - Lenovo ThinkTank T430s. Runs without any issues - just had a battery change this year.

Is this that marketing strategy of getting people to buy what they don't need?

The thing about running Windows 10 without any support is your computer is susceptible to all sort of attacks. There are a whole lotta scripts and whatnot out there that will just about attack ANYTHING and EVERYTHING.

On the other hand, hackers might give up on attacking Win 10 and switch their focus to Win 11.

Re: The Laptop Thread: Configs, deals & questions

Hi. I have been an old time apple ecosystem user and have recently bought a Mac mini. For the sake of it, last year I had bought a surface laptop which remains largely unused because in my experience, windows laptop doesn’t offer a comparable experience to mac.

I am currently thinking if my Mac mini can be hooked on to this windows laptop and use it as an external display to Mac mini. Is it possible? If someone could clarify the conundrum, I shall be very thankful. That’s the only way I can make some use of my windows laptop.
