Have you tried online vendors like below?

https://lapgadgets.in/product/origin...T480%20battery

I have recently bought a Dell laptop battery which was an original from one of the online sites. As you mentioned you need to be careful to ensure that it's an original and not an OEM. Also, it's best if you can open the laptop yourself and check the old battery and ensure to replace with the same part number. This ensures that you get an original and not just some OEM that is made to look original.

Re: The Laptop Thread: Configs, deals & questions

Hi Folks

Needed some help. My son is looking for an external trackpad for his laptop which can act as a mouse + also behave like a tablet. He sketches a lot and would like to sketch using the trackpad/tablet

Is there a device which can act both as a trackpad + writing tablet for laptops. Any help would be very welcome

You can look at Wacom graphics tablets available on Amazon. They work out of the box on Windows and Linux without the need for special drivers. CTL-472 is their entry level model.

Re: The Laptop Thread: Configs, deals & questions

I have a 6 year old laptop (Lenovo Yoga) with an Intel i5 8th gen cpu. It has 8 GB memory and I had upgraded the SSD to 1 TB at one time. It is no longer used very often, I have shifted to a Macbook Pro M1 and my son who is the other heavy user of computers in the house has a heavy duty gaming laptop. I do however, turn it on from time to time and am always struck by how laggy it is. I don't know if it the CPU or Windows itself which always seems to be awaiting some updates, but I use it for a few minutes and usually give up in disgust. It is such a contrast from my Macbook which is extremely reliable and I can almost guarantee that at the same age (6 years), it will still have several years of life left.

At this time, I don't want to really devote the time to this to try to make it work more reliably. I do find working with onedrive to be easier on this, so that is the primary use of this laptop. For everything else, I guess there is the mac or other devices.

My company issued MacBook Pro (2021) heats up like crazy. Would like to get this checked up at the Mac service centre. Can bhpian recommend a good dependable service centre at either Coimbatore or Cochin?

Re: The Laptop Thread: Configs, deals & questions

I'm in the market to buy 2 laptops for my 13 years old twins. Typical student usage like browsing, online classes, school related hw etc. Looking for suggestions for a reliable laptop with 500 gb ssd, 16gb ram and decent processor. Budget about 60-70k, lower the better. Also, is it cheaper to get from USA as I can ask my colleague to bring for me. Thanks much.

Always, USA prices are better compared to India. The below would come to around $500 all inclusive.

Usually, these are pretty solidly built. Go to activity monitor and check CPU usage and see if anything is taking too much.

Also, try cleaning unused apps

Is the budget of 70k for both laptops combined? if that's the case then here are a few options worth considering:

The above are a list of few laptops definitely worth considering. The last two definitely fall under 70k even without credit card discounts. Buying them with credit card or debit card discounts could get them even cheaper. The MSI Laptops and the Acer Swift series are extremely worthwhile purchases albeit MSI don't have many service centres like Lenovo. HP, Acer, Asus or Dell do.

I've been curious about this too but haven't yet come across anyone with one of these in the wild. Other than the glut of reviews from right after the launch, I've not come across too much in way of further Elite X based laptops getting reviews, although I'm rarely looking at reviews given I've no need to buy one myself.

That being said, if they truly hold the promise of offering Apple M-chip level battery life-performance balance, then when my personal XPS konks out, I could be tempted. To answer your final question it would appear that it's very much a wait and see approach still.

From what I recall they did a reasonable job with software compatibility in terms of a lot of run of the mill stuff that your average user needs being ported and for those X86 based programs, you have a half decent translation layer of some sort (though not quite as impressive as the Rosetta Stone implementation of Apples to get around incompatible software on the M-series).

Think I'd be sorely tempted if someone like Framework had an Elite X based option available alongside their Intel or AMD options.

Re: The Laptop Thread: Configs, deals & questions

I am in the market for a laptop to replace my Dell Inspiron, but I am unable to zero in on a replacement.

First thing, I want to keep the cost at around 70-80k (can stretch a bit). I also want i7 or comparable, 16GB RAM, SSD hard drive (capacity is not important as it will be connected to my OneDrive).

I run MS Office (Excel and Outlook in particular run all the time), easily 60-70 tabs in Firefox, and multiple IDEs (Eclipse & Android Studio at the very least). I take video-enabled calls frequently on some app or other.

Would prefer a 13" or 14" screen - bigger than that only if unavoidable. My external monitor is rather big.

My workstation setup has an external monitor (HDMI) and several USB peripherals (keyboard+mouse, printer, webcam, speaker, pen tablet...) which are all hooked to a multiport dock that connects to the laptop via USB type C. The dock can also pass along power drawn from an external source so I would like one that can charge through type C port.

What are my options?

Re: The Laptop Thread: Configs, deals & questions

Hello. I intend to get the MacBook Air (M2 or M3) through Costco in the US. I intend to ship the same to a friend who would then get it over to India where I am based.

I would like to know if I could buy AppleCare+ during the purchase and have it applicable in India too. Or, should I buy AppleCare+ off the India Apple store against this product (if allowed against international purchases) once I have it with me.

Costs of AppleCare+ for 3 years (US/India):

MacBook Air 13″ (M2): $179/$212

MacBook Air 13″ (M3): $199/$236

MacBook Air 15″ (M3): $229/$259

Here are the applicable terms on the of the plan off the AppleCare's website (similar wordings both off US and India sites):

"Apple may restrict Hardware Service and ADH Service to the country where the Covered Equipment was originally purchased."

"Service will be limited to the options available in the country where you request service. Service options, parts availability and response times may vary. If service is not available for the Covered Equipment in a country that is not the country of purchase, you may be responsible for shipping and handling charges to facilitate service to a country where service is available. If you seek service in a country that is not the country of purchase, you will comply with all applicable import and export laws and regulations and be responsible for all custom duties, V.A.T. or GST and other associated taxes and charges. For international service, Apple may repair or exchange products and parts with comparable products and parts that comply with local standards."

Mods: if there is a better thread for this post, please suggest the same.

We have two Lenovo Thinkpads - E14, 24GB, 512GB SSD. One is Ryzen 5 and another i5. Though they are not i7, but are fine for most of our jobs. Both cost around 70K after discounts and CC schemes.

My one is Ryzen and I use it with two external monitors (3 monitor setup) one 24" HD and another 27" 4K. I use a USB C hub for external devices - HDMI, USB etc. As I have a lot of legacy drives, I also have USB SATA hub to use SATA drives. Plus a USB DVD drive.

Regarding external drives I have decent collection of USB drives starting from 512 GB all the way to 5 TB, plus a dozen SATA drives (from my old desktop server).

So check whether you really need the processing power of an i7 or a lot of RAM (E14 i5 supports upto 40 GB RAM). Most of the time the extra RAM is more useful for maintaining 100+ tabs (as there is no need to swap the pages from RAM to disk), rather than the processing power.

I need both. I build (literally) software for a living.

Have a look at the higher end variants of HP Zbook. These are made with software development in mind. But the screen size usually goes up as does the slimness due to the higher end processors like I7/i9 which need a good amount of cooling and say 32+ gigs of Ram.

Have you thought about using a desktop for the power intensive work and remote logging to it from your laptop? This might work well in some cases.
