Shifted from Windows Omnia W to Android

My First Android Phone, Samsung I8552 Galaxy Grand Quattro bought on 22nd September 2013.

The below mentioned specifications are not that great but it was no deal breaker for me considering my usage pattern.

OS:Android v4.1.2 (Jelly Bean)
Processor:1.2 GHz Cortex-A5, Quad Core
Graphics:Adreno 203
Size:4.7 Inches
Resolution: 480 x 800 Pixels
Color:16 M
Primary Camera:5 Megapixel
Secondary Camera:0.3 Megapixel
Flash:LED
Video Recording:30 fps
Battery:Li-Ion, 2000 mAh
Memory:8GB internal
RAM:1GB
Sim: Dual (Micro sim)

PRICE: Rs 15,900/-
Screen Guard: Rs 100
Cover: Back Hard Cover white colour Rs 100

Pretty much happy with the battery back-up as i am using it from past 4 days battery lasts more than 36 hours with 30% charge remaining with calls, sms and data connection on for 12 hours a day with Email and whatsapp.

Will post a screen shot of battery usage in few days after monitoring if the back-up remains same over a period of time.

No hanging or lagging till now, i am using Clean master software which cleans the RAM every time i unlock the phone.

Camera performance is not that great but clicks decent pictures outdoors and i have a good Sony point&shoot camera.

Here is a picture - Excuse me for poor quality and lot of reflections

In sub 10k category i would personally sugest you go for Lumia 520. At 8800/- its a steal. Not seen or used lenovo phones so cant comment.

Even I feel that. More so because the Lumia 520 and this Lenovo A390 that my relative was considering have exactly the same specs. Better to pay a premium of 1k for the Nokia brand.

I agree. Also the Win Mobile OS is more fluidic and lag free when compared to the experience on entry level droids. I am an ex- Droid user now using BB Bold 3. But IF i feel like moving back to "Smartphones" Win 8 is surely going to be a top contender. :thumbs up

Guys please suggest a smartphone in the range of 7-9k ( max) for basic usage of calls, messaging and basic internet usage. The person was using one of those Samsung corby phone till now. Good battery life and durability is desirable for atleast 2 years.
How is the Lenovo A390? Also was thinking if Nokia Lumia 520 will be any good? You get Nokia brand and for basic usage it should do fine right?

Go for the Nokia. For phones below 15k, Nokia Lumias are so good. :)
Anything above that, and I'll switch to android.

PS: If you are used to the android environment, and really need its flexibility, then I would recommend to go for a better Android phone. Win 8 looks good but doesn't have utility of an android. It delays many of your common tasks ( even though it gives the 'feel' of speed ). The 'feel' is more due to the design where gui is given the highest priority. So, they fill you with animations while the background processes lag.

Any insights in to why the indian note 3 gets exynos and not the snapdragon 800 ?.

Commercial reasons I think , In Samsung ( and in most companies) each BU work as independent unit. Setting up a new fab / increasing capacity is 4/5 billion $ affair so can not sink in that much of capex if anticipated volumes ( not just note 3 but over all) are huge so sort of hedging IMHO .

Also QC supplies LTE chip-set as well so may be block deal on LTE devices.

Exynos uses big-little architecture ( 4+4 cores) for power saving rather then usual scaling down frequency.

No official word but i read at multiple places that it should be available end of October. They have leaked some screenshots of 4.3 on CHD. Also They have introduced OTA only since 4.2. BTW are you rooted?

Hi Akshay

No my Phone is not Rooted. OTA for the 4.3 update would be available only for phone with 4.2 or for 4.1 alos?

Any idea if the Samsung S2 can be updated beyond JB 4.1.2 officially?

No official 4.2 firmwares released yet.

Better wait for a month or more, rumors in the web suggest 4.3 would be released for some galaxy devices.

Keep your fingers crossed. The official ICS (forget JB) upgrade for the htc Incredible 2 is still in the works for over a year. Going to CWM etc. will involve reverting to Froyo, relocking the Bootloader (the official unlock was not available, so I used the AlphaRevX, like everybody else). The unlocking the bootloader officially and then moving up the ladder on CWM! I got so fed up I sold the Dinc2.

Sorry no idea about that. You may want to check with MMX csutomer care and take the phone to service center for upgrade. I hardly use stock ROM.

Thank you for responding.
The indian version of note 3 didn't come with adreno 330, instead it has a mali 628 gpu.

G2 on the other hand has Snapdragon 800 and adreno 330.
It s camera also has OIS, which is missing in the note 3.
I am starting to lean towards the G2.

Well there are cracks available however not really sure if I can take a chance by installing them. A colleague of mine tried doing so on his SE handset and it just crashed. He had to spend 1k to get it restored.

My friend is making a trip to US.
What would be a good phone to buy there ( for me - to use here in India ) like around $200~250.
I have a Dell Streak now (going strong with custom CM ROM with 1 day battery backup), and no particular reason I am looking for an upgrade.
But - will consider if it is today's spec'ed phone + good price delta (US price - India price )

Nexus 4 is what I have on mind. (but it shows sold out!! is it so?)
any thing better out there?

Thank you,

Ace.

Ace.

For phones, i feel you would get better deals in India rather here in US. Only when you sign a contract for couple of years, they might write-off the cost of a phone.

Nexus 4 -16gb is officially sold out in the US and Google has confirmed they won't be bringing it back on stock. Nexus 5 might be coming up in Christmas! Owning a nexus myself- it is simply an amazing phone except for the not so great camera!!
