Re: Networked Media Players - Play External HDD Content on TV

Please avoid the iomega media players. They have loads of firmware issues. Any among WDTV, Xtreamer, AC Ryan, Kaiboer, Asus O Play are a much better deal since they have very few firmware bugs.

All the above will play mkvs without much trouble.

Thanks. Also wanted to know if the media players you suggested above have inbuilt HDD & if yes then NTFS or FAT32. Also if they can play external content, can we connect NTFS formatted HDD's. The reason i am asking you this is that in FAT32 the file size is limited to 4GB, whereas in NTFS with .mkv files as large as 14GB can be stored. Don't want to haste on this & regret later.

I am looking at buying the Asus OPlay Air. Advantage is that since all media is on my PC, it will be able to play those over wireless. Anyone has feedback on this?

I used 9GB file with xtreamer, files from NTFS partition shared on network.

Over the wireless, SD content is played flawlessly. Only issue comes with HD content. Neither 720P nor 1080p played over wireless flawlessly. I tried using n-routers + USB n-clients at both legs of network. Still results marginally improved over g-router.
g router throughput is 7Mbps while n router throughput is 10-12 Mbps.

Jitter present while HD content played from computer HDD. Wired network is better for this. Otherwise use 1 TB WD-passport USB disk, copy all HD content to that. I installed 500GB inside xtreamer and HD content copied to 1-TB connected with USB. Also think of something like network storage kept near wireless router.

Re: Networked Media Players - Play External HDD Content on TV

Anyone on this thread with a Media Player/ Networked Media player has setup any app that lets you browse Facebook ?

I have an old 2nd generation Popcorn hour A110. In case there are any generic Apps wanted to check if I could use them.

The Popcorn 200 and C300 series have built in FB support but not the series I own. It does support Flicker/Picassa though.

Re: Networked Media Players - Play External HDD Content on TV

Has anyone tried Google TV from Logitech - Logitech Revue™ With Google TV™?

Seems like they have slashed price from initial $299 to $99.

Any idea if it allows one to use the TV for surfing the web, would be great to watch videos online on a TV.

When you say cables from TataSky you mean using composite cables right? There are two types of cables, composite & component. If the TataSky has composite then yes it would work

Re: Networked Media Players - Play External HDD Content on TV

I bought Asus O!play hd2 in May'11 for 7000 INR.Plonked in a 1.5TB 3.5" HDD.It is able to play all formats.Even played subtitles that were embedded onto video. It has options to change fonts size and colour of subtitles.Remote reception is quite good even from a distance of 15-20 ft.
But ,after the intial excitement died down, am back to watching movies on laptop .Becuase, family occupies the tv most of the time.

It can download torrents, can act as NAS,can connect to picasa and flickr , can stream videos(not youtube) etc.,. But the processor is something of 425 mhz only and hence cannot do multitasking. So , if I want to watch movies, I have to stop anyother running service. Didn't try wifi on this but wired it to router.

I suggest you check this out before you go ahead with your purchase.

Buy Western Digital 1TB WDBACA0010BBK SESN TV Live Hub at Best Price in India - Also find Specifications, Photos, Features & Reviews

Do compare this with the Elements Play & decide. I am thinking of buying the Live Hub.

Re: Networked Media Players - Play External HDD Content on TV

Here is a small problem I am facing with my setup. If someone can point me in the right direction.

I have a 42'' Plasma LG with 3x HDMI slots & a USB slot
I also have a WD 1TB Live Hub which has a HDMI slot, USB x 2, and a ethernet slot.
I have a BSNL wi-fi connection router which is placed in another room.
I have a netgear 1000 rupees wifi dongle.

How do I connect my WD Live Hub to the Internet ? I tried plugging in the netgear dongle BUT WD does not recognise it !

What is the best way. I know if I get the telephone cable in my room I can get the router BUt that would mean cluttering my bedroom table with another piece of equipment which I do not want to.

Any suggestions are more than welcome

Hmmm. I am not so clear on it. Actually I asked them what are the accessories they are giving. I was sure they will give only a USB cable. Ant that was the case also.

I am a simple guy. Here we see yellow, white and red sockets. Ok, they are there behind the red BHP lettering. You can go to flipkart link to see the box.

On the tata sky box also the same are there. And on the back of my TV too. The heads of the tata sky cable are also of same color on either end. So I felt It will connect. Same color na

How come they are quoting 10k+ for 1 TB when Flipkart is giving 2TB box for Rs 9200? And the letsbuy thing is not even on USB3.0 to justify the premium. Am I missing something? Ok. Streaming content capability maybe is the reason for price difference.
