When I got back my vehicle for service the advisor advised me :) to change the brake pad within another 500 km as he is saying that the brake pad will be completely worn out by that time. Also, I do notice squeaking sounds coming from the front wheels when I take a turn even at slow speeds. Does this indicate brake pad failure?

FYI - My car has run 20,000 kilometers.

I am taking my SWIFT ZXI for 4th Services, run 10,000 KM, can somebody please tell me what will form the service and the cost. I called Sai Service and asked them what would be approx cost and the service manager told me it Rs. 9500. I was shell shocked.

Please advice quickly

Maruti servicing is definitely not cheap and all depends on that particlar MASS.
Every SA is given fixed targets and is not surprising when the poor unsuspecting maruti owners fall preyto their boobytrap. For example at 20K they would recommend engine and transmission flush which would cost 1700 bucks. No need for this at all.
Another trick is the 'specialized" engine bay treatment (which is simple cleaning of the engine bay with a 3M or simolar product), Additives (to engine and gear oil), interior clening, etc.
My earnest request to car owners is to desist from falling in these traps.

He is including a lot of stuff thats not required. Do not put any additives, no decarbonsiation and any of the stupid stuff.

Follow your service manual ONLY. Change all oils & filters only. The service will not cost you more than 4-5k.

4-5K is for the 20000 km service, I think - this is where oil & filter are changed, coolant is changed, sparks are changed etc, etc.

10000km should cost less than 2000 if oil & filter are being changed.

Check the manual as to what needs to be done at 10000km & do only those.

He mentions that it is the 4th service, which should have happened at 20k but is actually happening at 10k. So he would have to do all 20k things to retain warranty.

How the hell did he get to 4th service within 10k?

First is 1000, Second is 5000, Third is 10000

There is a time component attached to each service also. AFAIK, its 20k or one year, whichever is earlier.

It is 10k or one year for 3rd service, and 20k or 2 years for 4th. 4th service is anyway paid, so ideally it shouldn't lead to compulsion on part of customer to get the service done before 20k, say, driven by fear of losing free service coupon.

Okay, so if someone has driven 10k in two years, he will have to get the 4th service done to keep the warranty intact.

Already recommended ngk plugs and 'total quartz 7000' to a friend who is getting his swift serviced soon.

Anyone know of a good transmission oil, brake oil and coolant?

I gave the car for service at RKS Motors-Saboo Care (Secunderabad). I must admit that they have a great support service. I liked the service advisor "MALIKARGJUN" swell guy. Took care of every thing and the car was handed over with lot of shine.

The charges:

1. Distelled Water 1 Ltr: Rs. 62.88
2. 75W-90/P20L Gear Oil: Rs. 643.68
3. Filter, Oil Rs. 69.00
4. Coolant (SB) Non Amine Rs. 205.24
5. Brake Fluid GC 1500AA (250ML PACK) Rs. 135.37
6. Screen Wash Conceterate (50 ML) Rs. 13.10
7. MGO (20W40)-SHELL Rs. 178.17 (Do not know what is this for?)
8 Paid Service Rs. 900.00
9. Misc Labour Rs. 40.00 (for Cabin light check/problem was reported while giving for service)
10. All Door Adjustment Rs. 220 (This is not asked for and a rip off)

Total Cost ...... Rs. 3306.00

They had put in an Engine Flush of Rs. 600+ while giving the car for service, thanks to TBHP, I politely told them that was not needed.

There is more that seems like a rip off. At 10000kms why on earth do you need gear oil, brake fluid & coolant to be changed. I have never seen a Maruti requiring a change of these fluids this early in life. Gear oil is usually changed at 40K and the brake fluid might need a top up around 20K but change is again generally recommended at 40K. With the given charges it seems they have used a liter of gear oil and that seems like a change as does the brake fluid with 250ml being charged for. At 205.24 it looks like they have used 2 liters of coolant. Why? was your car running without any. At 30% coolant and 70% water 2L is all the coolant that your car will need, infact for Swift's radiator you need less than 2L the rest being water. Why have they poured new coolant.

Further why only 178.17 for the engine oil. They should have changed the oil with a pour of 4 liters that the Swift takes in, after all they did change the oil filter but how did they do that? if they topped up with only 178.17 worth of oil. When the oil filter is opened up almost all of the oil in the sump would come out in matter of seconds. SO if they only topped up they would not have been able to change the oil filter but the charge is there.

What is MGO Shell? AFAIK MGO is from Servo or Castrol and more recently from Mobil but Shell, I do not think so. Moreover the cheapest of Shell oils is like 400+ a liter so at 178 odd they have charged you for what like less than a half liter. It seems that they just topped up the oil and charged you for the filter, that too without changing it. BTW what do you mean when you say "I don't know what is this for" against the oil charges. You are joking right? Point is if you did not know you should have asked the service guys there and then when you got the bill and before you paid up.

900 for paid service, that is huge! I have a Swift zxi too but do not recall having paid that much. Infact my Cedia's paid service charges are 750/-

The door adjustment may be the one job that they might have actually carried out as the doors do tend to hang down with the everyday bump and grind that the vehicle goes through. However after all of the above I am wondering whether they actually lifted the doors to their original height or whether they just poured old engine oil in to the door hinges.

Please refer to your owner's manual to see the recommended change intervals and to see what all is really required to be done at 10K.

The thought behind my post is just to open up your eyes to the big bad world of automotive maintenance. While it may not be worth while to argue with the service center, I would recommend you to consult a trusted mechanic/knowledgeable friend and confirm that the gear oil, brake fluid and the coolant are indeed new and up to the required levels. As long as that is so, consider it your good luck. Further ask them to check the engine oil and if required do drain and change the oil and use a new filter even though the service center might have put in a new one during the service. However if the various fluids being discussed are old, then it is another story and one that you may want to narrate to the regional offices of the manufacturer.

The Maruti manual recommends change of gear oil, brake fluid and coolant after 20k Kms or 2 years whichever is earlier.

Shell has a MGO 20W40, that is what i put in my last service. It is priced around 500 for 3L so i guess the price is Rs 178.litre. Also for the bill to be 3300 the invoice probably has 4L so 4X 178 ~ Rs720 for the oil
The cheapest shell oil is HX3 and is around RS 170 /litre followed by HX5 which is around Rs 220/litre
