If the 335i makes it to the Indian shores the biggest rival to it would be none other than the 328i itself.

Simply because the N20 engine is so good and so it wouldnt justify the premium you would want to pay for the 335 ?

Buttt as the 335i has a fair chance of being a CBU , BMW could be generous and offer a 6 M/T as an option & that would be reason enough to buy one

Basically, BMW made some self -customized 'trims' and gave them as an option to buyers who wouldn't want to fully customize the car themselves.

Now if a certain engine is only limited to a certain trim, that is making no sense to me. I can jolly well order the 320D and get the sports bumber and the associated accesories with it and make it my own "sports" trim with a 320D. There is nothing stopping me from doing it when customizing my order.
Hi warhound,
Just realized i made it sound like the different trims will only be available with certain engines , but i don't think that will be the case. What i have posted is what they have assembled initially .

Also these different trims are more than just external mods. The interiors also carry the theme and there is a lot of difference on the insides , to the extent that even the illumination on the dials are different between the luxury and sport !
Cheers

I wouldn't think so because they already have CBU in India. If sales start in last quarter, the cars are already 8-9 months old. To add to it they will have to sell CBU at CKD prices (well, they can be the same).
If they give an option for 3 liter inline 6, that would be a heck of a car.

well the cbu units don't have sunroofs, i doubt bmw is going to sell the 3 series without a sunroof hoping these are demo cars. we will soon find out..

I am sorry but i have to correct you on that one. Those two are totally different animal, despite sharing the same basic motor. The twinpower turbo makes all the difference. Comparing just the basic 0-60 of 5.9 for 328 and 4.7 -5.0 for 335 will tell you more than you need. Moreover, 335i is a tuner's dream car.
I have re mapped my 335i N54 and it is actually faster than most m3s out there. And all i ve spent on it is $500.
It is a great option to have it in india. I mean, i for one, would choose a 435i(coupe version for next gen 3 series) over an M3 coupe, simply because i can do what ever mods i want and it would still be about 15 lacks cheaper. And at the end of the day they both look quite similar. Moreover the F30 M3 is also going to be a straight 6 engine, So its not like people are giving up the V8 feel of the car.

I am not saying 335i is an alternative to M3 but its the closest thing you're gonna get for a lot cheaper mrp. And having driven a 335i for over 3 years, i still love the motor as much as i did when i first got it.

What you mean by sharing the same basic motor? Maybe I am wrong. I thought the new 328i is 2L turbocharged, whereas the 335i got the 3L turbocharged 6 cyl beast under the hood.

BMW 3-series launch review by Carpoint Australia:

BMW 318d and 320i: Launch Review

Pros:
>> Pricing!
>> Decent base packaging
>> Better styling

Cons (Maybe):
>> No paddle-shift option for 318d
>> Take-or-leave Sport spec styling
