This is active since 1st Feb. One of my car does come up while the new one doesn't because it's registered to a relatively new RTO. And yes the 'number' does stand for the number of owners.

This service would also help in ensuring that your car is transferred after you sold it.

The government's sms service by Vahan was discontinued, but is now active once again. Details such as the vehicle owner's name, the car's model, fuel type, category (e.g. LMV), RC expiry date and motor vehicle tax validity will be received via sms in around 1 minute. The service may not be active for all RTOs and certain vehicle registration numbers may not be in the database.

To use the service, all you have to do is sms VAHAN <space> the vehicle's registration number (upper case letters with no spaces), and send it to 7738299899.

Works as intended, But i am not very happy about the amount of information is shown, Specially the finance part.

Tried that for my own car, I got the following reply via SMS in under 10 seconds.
KA02ME**** [RTO, BANGALORE, WEST, KA]
OWNER: 1 - *****
Vehicle: i10 Magna 1.2 IMMNA
LMVCAR - LMV (Car)
RC/FC Expiry: 26 May 25
MV Tax upto: (Lifetime)

I have blocked out the name and registration number of the car.
However, what is that IMMNA next to magna? I didn't get what that is

It works fine for me too as I got the number changed after taking car to different state, and was wondering how it will react.

- for old number it says contact with your RTO while that for new number it returns correct details and keeps me as owner no. 1

Still works fine, Me and couple of my friends checked out each others car numbers and all of them came back to be completely fine, Only issue for me is the model of my XUV 500 shows, XUV 500 W10 FWD, Even though mine is AWD. Wonder if it will affect me while selling out the car late on.

Its not working anymore for me too, Looks like the system either isn't very stable or might be taken off soon, It was working fine past 2-3 weeks, Not anymore.

This worked for me only once when it was started sometime in 2012 and I did get the details but never after that. Tried it again last month and did not get a response

Yeah i have been trying on the updated number that is 7738299899, Doesn't work for me anymore though

Yup I did try it again just now but its still not working. Not getting a response sms after sending in my vehicle details

Oh! I will check from my phone too. However, you can always have access to such data through this website: www.parivahan.gov.in
Browse to online services > 'know your RC status' and enter the regn. details. Will show up the result instantaneously.
