Doesnt work for DL registered vehicle .. :(
It worked on all my Uttaranchal and UP registered vehicles.
Cheers...
Hey, this is a very useful piece of information. Works for my car which was registered in Jharkhand. Thanks a ton.
Doesn't work for vehicles registered in Kerala. Tried with my bike and my 9 month old car, on both occasions got an SMS "data not found".
Vow... It worked well for my previous car that I sold in 2009. Good to know that car is not on my name anymore.
Due to this technological sophistication, another piece of restricted information is made public now.

I think the success of this finding out vehicle details through SMS solely depends on each RTO located everywhere in India. This being a centralised system/Vahan NIC vehicle info finder on SMS can only flash messages based on how updated and correct the details are, i.e; data forwarded/uploaded by RTO's
For my old car which was sold in 2010, it still shows the owner as me eventhough I have a copy of the RC entry showing transfer of ownership
Regarding the privacy issue, in a smaller town it may be a lot easier to identify individuals.
Did'nt work for my Mumbai registered vehicle MH02 XX XXXX, maybe it works for vehicles registered with certain RTO's only?
Thanks for the info mukaan.
I was trying for a car which has been lying close to my bldg for few months and is a MH12(Pune) registered car. Tried this Vahan sms which gave the owners name and car model information. Is there any way one could get the address or phone number of the owner and notify him.please:
Interesting results from my 2 attempts at using this SMS service.
1. KA05 registered Zen (1997 model) bought in Jan 2003, crashed and scrapped Nov 2003. Returned a name which wasn't the first owner or me. I wonder what the RTO does with the records of scrapped cars? Do they go into permanent limbo instead of getting a "scrapped" status (like they do in Europe)?
2. KA03 registered Kinetic Honda (1999 model) which I bought in Sep 2008 and sold in Apr 2010. Returned the name of the first owner.

HI,
YES........you can do it, but you need a chassis no. to get the details here is the link.

This is great, thanks for sharing! Works perfect for all our vehicles, and all the old ones show as transferred. I'm finding this particularly useful while going through the pre-owned listings for something I'm interested in.

Thanks subbarao but I'm aware of this website. The problem is that the chassis no can only be seen when the bonnet is open, which in the case is not possible. Unlike VW where the vin is even displayed on the below left of front windscreen and even in the engine bay.
I don't find this to be a good move by the transport department. Our vehicle details are out in the open and stalkers can anonymously track people using their vehicle details. Surprised by this move when the government goes to great lengths in educating the society about information security! In my opinion there should be some authentication process before vehicle details are revealed.
Excellent works for all the cars that we had/have in the family across NCR, Kerala, Bangalore and Tamilnadu. Great piece of information. Will be very handy for me in Bangalore, with nasty hit and run taxis and bikes.
