However as somebody has rightly pointed out earlier. It kinda breaches your privacy.

I don't know how it breaches privacy just by returning name and road tax valid upto details. It doesn't gives address or phone number. You just know in whose name the vehicle is registered and how does that help is indeed a question mark.

Agreed. Not a very serious privacy breach. This may not matter much for a commoner.

However for people who would not want to use it for the intended reasons, the Vahan+Google combo would go a long way in throwing out the most crucial inputs needed for the trade. I don't wanna elaborate on this further in an open forum since it can't get more obvious than this.

Hope you get the intended message across!!

Thanks ,it worked for me too.this is very useful while buying 2nd hand vehicles

Didn't work for my Maharashtra registered cars of 2008 and 2012!!!!

Is there some other number for Maharashtra???

No, the number is same for every state. Make sure you are following the correct syntax as per first post.

Send a SMS to 092123 57123 typing vahan <space> <regn number without space>

I checked the details of my vehicles registered in chennai
Scooter sold in 2007 - shows the current owner's name
Bike bought in 2007 - data not available
Car bought in 2011 - precise

Now having said that, I tried searching the regn number's of some VIP's cars and voila it gives their name and vehicle details. Now that's a serious intrusion of privacy, not just for VIPs but for all.

Works great for all my cars too. Just realised my Laura is wrongly listed as Superb.

Oh! If that is how it works, can i please have the 3.6 FSI AWD variant delivered to my place? :D Color Black this time please.

BTW details are not available for my Chandigarh registered Fiat Punto.

Works for Rishikesh (Uttarakhand) as well! :) This thing is great, will surely come in-handy while purchasing a car from a used-car market. It also tells you, the number of owners that the car's had! Brilliant!

For newly registered cars in some RTO's this does not work. I tried for my Civic, the registration number had come on December 11th but the RC book is yet to come, and it did not gave any details. Says "Vehicle not found" or something to that effect.

It works for me in Pune.

But a noob question. What is the utility of it for common people?

I see someone violating some traffic rule and i find out the details of that vehicle using the above number and do what?? Only sending the registration number to the Traffic Police should be enough for them to take action.

Another good thing, when i checked the registration details for a used car i was planning to buy, it even gave details about the ownership. In my case i am buying from the second owner and in the sms it mentioned 2nd owner along with name and other details. So i guess its good for second hand car buyers who want to find out the current details of ownership and verify if he is the first or second owner.

Just tried this for my car.

The number of owners is incorrect. It should read 2, but shows 1.
Would'nt go by this to buy a used car.

worked for my father's car in haryana, but sold off two years back. Still hows it to be in his name. But didn't work for my car registered in chandigarh.
