Working perfectly in delhi, got reply within 2 seconds. Gave correct information checked with my car no.

To be honest, I'm not very comfortable with this idea. I agree, this is the age where every bit of information is digitised and online for everyone to see; but, this having such information might just throw up privacy issues. Agree, this will help a great deal when it comes to resolving accident cases but there is a significant potential for misuse - road rage etc.

I remember, there's even a website run by the GOI that gives out vehicle information (reg. no, type, chassis no., insurance details, owner details etc.) - can't recall it though.

Just like you need an FIR to find out mobile no. details and call history, probably they should have a mechanism to safeguard vehicle information too.

My regn. check had a glitch, it said Santro XL, instead of Elantra GLS. Other details were OK.

I entered a Bihar registered car (now that state is Jharkhand) and this is the reply that I received: Vehicle Details Not Found. Verify the Vehicle No or Contact Registering Authority for digitization the deails. Exact words with some words beginning with a Capital alphabet.

Btw, they won't listen to me when I suggest digitization. Would they? HAHA.

works fine in chennai. Checked for all my cars. Correct Info!! In fact for one of my car registered in 2002 which I sold in 2009 I received the info with the name of the second owner.

Tried and it works in Bangalore too :) but any guesses how much these SMS are charged?? Don't think normal rates would apply.... anyone explored this?

Works in A.P too but it can only fetch information of the first registered owner of the vehicle. Tried on my 2010 pulsar which was sold and the registration has been transferred long time ago but it still says it's registered under my name.

While I agree with your views but it is not that serious as it don't provide address of the owner. Name, alone can not do much.

and yes the function is working for Delhi, Gurgaon and Faridabad.

Privacy issues - well, how about other countries like US and Europe, where privacy is a no-nonsense affair? Is this kind of information open there too?

Waiting for a mobile app that can take the picture of a vehicle, decode the number and send SMS automatically :)

Works well in Bangalore even on 2nd owner's details, my Alto was sold on 2010, and ownership transfered and it given correct information, thanks for sharing.

Great Info! Works flawlessly for most of our post 2005 registered vehicles.

However as somebody has rightly pointed out earlier. It kinda breaches your privacy.

But its funny to note that you still can't find the information on https://vahan.nic.in/nrservices/face...rchDetails.jsp without knowing the chassis number!
