re: General Motors India recalls 1.14 lakh units of the Tavera

More trouble for GM.
After Tavera, General Motors India may recall Sail Sedan, U-VA diesel variants too!

I was just reading the same thing. Things are not looking good for GM.
They launched 3 cars in short time without much dhamaka. Now i wonder if they kind of hurried into this launch. Also is Indian emission norms way to stringent than chinese ? Isnt SAIL a popular car in china ?

In China, Sail has no diesel option. GM had to do some reengineering to fit in the diesel engine in Sails twins and Enjoy. These models are specific to India, are only these are being recalled.

Well if this happens , pretty much half their product line is under an impact and this is not going to go down well at with respect to the company's perception - and if the recall happens then it happens on one of the better selling products within their entire portfolio.

re: General Motors India recalls 1.14 lakh units of the Tavera

So now GM will lose more money on whatever modifications they have to carry out for tavera's turning up.

I only wish ARAI checks with an Iron hand that each GM Tavera sold through each dealership actually touches base with existing owners. Otherwise GM can again wash off their hands saying we called but nobody turned up.

I now understand why Isuzu did not bother making their original diesel engine for the Tavera BS-III upwards compliant beyond 2005. Isuzu would not like to have their reputation tarnished unlike Government motors (GM).

re: General Motors India recalls 1.14 lakh units of the Tavera

What the media and everyone in general are missing is that these cars are being recalled for emission issues. It is also confirmed by the fact that the Tavera's catalytic converter will be changed to fix the issue.

Does any responsible official recognize the meaning of it? It means GM has sold these cars from 2005 while not meeting the emission norms. So, they have made more damage to the environment than they were legally allowed to. What a pathetic remark is this "there have been no customer complaints" from GM?

Shouldn't GM be slapped with a hefty fine for failing to meet the emission norms for such a long duration? Even the responsible government officials & bodies who own the emission norms need to be held responsible.

Are we this insensitive to the environmental issues that a recall is enough to fix such a crime?

re: General Motors India recalls 1.14 lakh units of the Tavera

This is a serious case of cutting corners. While India is welcoming global gaints with open arms, there is no regulatory agency whatsoever to keep them in check. No wonder global brands like GM are selling us chinese cars with engines sourced from other companies. So what exactly is GM in these GM cars?

Post Tavera recall fiasco, General Motors fires top international executives.

If the world's second-largest carmaker has done it there is no guarantee that others have not done - Now puts Auto Industry under the lens!

This is a serious breach and should be taken seriously.

And high time SIAM wakes up and put some processes in place to handle such violation, recalls, addressing consumer complaints due to manufacturing defects etc. After all, we (both manufacturers and customers) pay a lot for the cars and fuel in India.

MUMBAI: Just a week after the Indian subsidiary of General Motors announced the recall of its workhorse Tavera multi-utility vehicle, the automobile giant has expelled top officials, including its chief financial officer and R&D executives, for "violating company policies". The dragnet may expand further as many others are under the scanner.

The recall in India created ripples at GM's Detroit headquarters, with 20-25 senior officials reportedly handed out pink slips.

Karl Sym's role also needs to be put under scanner, can he be still made accountable and included under the probe being conducted by GOI. With a reported loss of 364 crores and financial impact of recalls of Tavera and eventually Sail twins, dismal launch of Enjoy, falling sales of Beat and Spark this is like final nail in the coffin for GM in India.

re: General Motors India recalls 1.14 lakh units of the Tavera

Details emerging say that substantially lighter vehicles were given for testing.
Now that would reduce the actual emission levels, I thought that the reqd emission levels were relaxed for heavier vehicles.

Needed a lawyer to simplify all the rules for us laymen.

I know people in GM India who will likely be affected (in Bangalore). Can you please provide a link for this?

This is just industry grapevine I heard from one of my colleagues. Since you know someone there you should be telling us what really is happening.
