Would add more value to the blokes at Mahindra (as and when they go through the thread), if you classify the wants based on their ability to affect your purchase decision.

1. Must have (Or I'll not buy the next generation Thar)
2. Should have (Important, but not a deal breaker if missed).
2. Could have (Desirable, but not necessary)

My wishlist - (Just an example. I'm no Jeeper - but I don't mind getting one as a highway explorer and mild offroader, purely thanks to its unique identity)

Must Have - Factory a/c, Factory hardtop option, Forward facing rear seats, ABS, Dual airbags. (Or I'm not buying the vehicle)

Should Have - Better diesel engine with the low end issues resolved. Better interior quality, especially the door area. (Will improve the feel good factor by miles, but if the rest of the package and price comes right - these are not deal breakers).

Could Have - Basic features - like power windows. Sharper, boxier design like Commander than MM540.

The XUV 500 has too many curves; the only thing good about the 'KUV 100' was its television commercial; the 'TUV' was ghastly; and the NuvoSport was, well... tall-ish...........
I am firmly in the M&M club & I too love the Thar - and since I'm no hardcore off-road enthusiast (my touring over the years being restricted mostly to Mumbai > Lucknow > Uttaranchal and back to Mumbai) I've been hoping that a factory-fitted hard-top version would put in an appearance sometime - in vain.

But I'll stick my neck out & insist that the Scorpio is probably the most well-rounded & inclusive product to come out of their stable. And its long run is well-deserved. My love affair lasted 14.5 years - I bought mine in '04 and sold it just a month ago. And it was a sweet & sour affair! We have had a blast with it all along - us and our menagerie of two generations of boxers!

Oh, that feeling of Deja Vu... at least for the old timers.

That is how the seed for Thar was sown 10 years ago by the creator of Thar.
I know "if wishes were horses, beggars would fly", but let's hope that some is reading this thread

Not just a more rigid canopy. Offer a factor fitted hard top s one of the variants.

And since I too don't think that there will ever be a Thar EV, I hope that M&M will not disappoint the Thar aficionados.

The front facia looks too ugly to express. Heck, if Mahindra is really going to design the new Thar this disproportionate way it would be a blunder. I am pretty sure the chief creator of the Thar would also grin at this from heavenly abode.

Does it have only one wiper blade? OMG! The partial paint on the wiper arm reeks of the shoddy paint job too.

Hold your horses. AFAIK this vehicle is out on road for mechanical component testing.
Look at incomplete front grill, wiper, front bumper missing, do you think any manufacturer in today's world can be so bad?
This Thar is more than just mechanical changes unlike earlier/current one which uses old Jeep (540/550) body.

Side profile looks proportional, with wider body, better safety kits, better the Highway manners, this Jeep could be the Bullet among cars. Commuter + lifestyle = good sales numbers.

I have a Aug 2015 refreshed Thar. It has seen some rugged use and some more. I live in the hills of Darjeeling and my better half's place is quite secluded as far as roads are concerned. They have a road but it is more a river during the monsoons, a river in the hills though and not plains. Even in the dry season, the road is quite challenging and requires a 4H. Since it is my wife's place, it means my second home and hence the Thar is almost always traversing some very difficult terrain.

Out in the highways I have driven across during my trips to Assam, Meghalaya, Bhutan and Nepal, the Thar has been a reliable companion. It is not comfortable but it gets you there. In fact, I don't like to drive hatchbacks and pseudo SUVs anymore (no offense intended to the owners of these type of vehicles). I love my Thar and I have installed the rear seats from Rohan Rogeotech. Besides this the only addition has been the two Hella Comet 500 yellow fog lights and the HUD system with rear camera.

Thar in its current state, I believe looks beautiful, drives amazingly and is very competent off-road. The recent pictures of the upcoming Thar does seem to indicate a wide stance which in my opinion does not look good and is neither off road friendly.

Would you please share some inside pictures of your Thar where the extra fittings you mentioned can be seen?

Absolutely impressive. I'm happy to learn some of the product was the result of a wise man willing to hear opinions of others. Thank you for your response; I'm new to Team-BHP.

A set of springs has never made me happier!

I think this is just a very early pre-prod test mule, may not even be a future Thar but just a chassis testing exercise for future Scorpio etc for crash-test clearance.

Going by the current-gen Thar's body which is quite an old shell, I guess it may require lots of work in order to make it crash test worthy.

Also, quite strange to see Gaadiwaadi calling it an exclusive when pics were clearly available on the 4X4 page on FB.

Nice way of classifying the wish list in terms of the power to affect the purchase decision.

Accordingly, I will list my requirements in order of priority, keeping in mind the BSVI and safety norms being introduced from 1 April 2020, which will take care of safety features like airbags, etc.

Must Have: Hard top and forward facing rear seats options. Plus an engine to match the one in the current version.

Should Have: HUD with reversing camera and the classic design of the current version.

Could Have: Other basic features like power windows, electric ORVMs and infotainment system.

Like other Thar aficionado waiting for the next gen Thar to be launched, I too am hoping that this thread is being closely monitored by the powers that be at M&M.

I am not sure if the pictures attached here are relevant, Moderators kindly remove it if it's not. I am mere responding to Blooming Flower's request. The intention is also to show what is there not to like in the present Thar. So here goes..

I shall be satisfied with just one modification - move the 4WD shifter knob to the other side of the main gear shifter. This was originally designed for a Left-hand drive vehicle and was never changed for a Right-hand drive. The shifter fouls with foot placement - there's absolutely no room for me to place my Left foot anywhere!

Cheers

Next-gen Mahindra Thar is likely to get new 2.0-litre diesel engine.

Quote:
2.0-litre diesel will put out 140hp and over 300Nm; to come with an all new chassis and body but lesser wheel articulation may hamper off-road ability.
Quote:
The new Thar will be powered by Mahindra’s new 2.0-litre diesel engine which will be compliant with BS-VI emissions regulations (unlike the current 2.5-litre unit). Power and torque will see a big jump from the current Thar’s 105hp/247Nm figures. Expect the new Thar to make 140hp and upwards of 300Nm of torque.
Quote:
While not much is known in terms of looks, insiders suggest the designers have been asked to make next-gen Thar look more modern while retaining its original character.
