Just a small feedback, I have a 2012 Rapid 1.6 TDI and had my emission update done during my yearly service in may earlier this year. Post the update I did mention in the forum that there is a bit of an increased engine clatter at lower speeds, but once you move on it isn't so different. Also the surge in 2nd and the third gears got a little flattened. At least that's my initial feedback.

Anyway, I did my first Highway run of 400kms last week on the Bangalore-Salem highway. I'm a spirited but careful driver on the highway, and I sort of know this particular route like the back of my hand ( not literally:-) )

So I did floor the car and I did high speeds without any real stress on the car.

The point I'm trying to make is that I know this route so well that I almost know where to floor it and where not and hence I'm sort of able to gauge the difference between the pre-emission behaviour and the post.

My feeling is that the initial feedback is more or less right. It's still mighty quick, that surge is gone a little bit, but not a significant difference.

So folks who are on the fence thinking about the emission upgrade for 1.6, don't be too worried.

I don't know about the 1.5 but the service guy did say something like the 1.6 seems to have handled this emission upgrade better than the 1.5. Again that's subjective.

Gave the car for 60k service the day before. As usual, the service centre was overbooked and we got the car yesterday (after forcing them to).

Went on a drive today morning and I felt the car wasn't pulling like it used too and there's noticeable drop in mileage!

I had instructed them several times not to do the update- atleast 3-4 times and the same has been noted down too!

The power difference is noticeable and I got only 17.1 kmpl instead of the usual 18.5 kmpl I get on the regular Saturday morning drives! That feeling of driving an effortless car is simply missing!

Is there any solution other than remapping/tunning boxes/ selling it off? I was really happy with the car until today!

Unfortunately, there is no other alternative. Even the VW guys will not be able to revert it back. You have only three options:

1. Drive the car for a few days and you may get used to the power.
2. Go for a remap. This has been done by many other members here and they have all been very happy with the decision.
3. Upgrade the car - Except for the Octavia (1.8TSi, 2.0TDi or the 2.0TSi VRS), I don't see any other sedan in this segment that can replace the Jetta, if you are used to the fantastic power, ride and handling!

Considering the above, I think a remap is the best choice for you to enjoy the car a few more years.

It's better to roll back the emission update SW and then do a remap for good results. GT Tunerz / Quantum UK are offering only roll back too.

It is great watch and delves into the whole methodology how VW went about cheating the testing agencies. And am sure the same software / defeat device would have worked in clearing through the Indian regulations too. This whole Dieselgate of VW and thereafter of Jap car industry scandals across the board makes one think (it has forced me atleast) if Big Corporations really have checks and balances to ensure they do what is right!

While I love cars and have love speed, this whole dieselgate incident has made me think if my personal penchant to get the kick in the seat of the pants is justified in the light of greater pollutants that I would be releasing. Many would say that there are far many more polluting vehicles in India, but somehow I feel that justification is not good enough. Global warming is very real and very much here and we all need to contribute in everyway possible to reduce our carbon footprint. Else we may not have a livable planet in 100Yrs.

Sorry for the rant but the documentary was very thought provoking and all car afficionados must watch it.

P.S: in the preceding posts someone has mentioned why did the PUC tests not catch the polluting vehicles. The defeat device patch in the software was linked to steering movement. If the car was being accelerated without zero steering movement, it will detect it as test cycle and change the combustion mode to give the least possible emissions.

P.P.S: Just to understand the extant of pollution, these VW diesels were emitting upto 60X of permissible limit of NOX in actual driving conditions!
