Do you insist on genuine spare parts always?

A genuine spare parts drive is going on at toyota india right now, which brought to me this question .

Team-bhpians what do they do,In my case even if it was a small nut I always insisted it should always be the authorised one even if it meant it would cost twice as much[Ironically dont have this liberty anymore].

But guys what do you do,Do you give preference to cost or do you also insist on the original spares always.

Same here. I always buy genuine only. Cheaper in the long run. And more important, it helps fussy types like me to sleep better at night :-)

Absolutely YES.
Even in our old M800, its always the genuine parts which are used.

Normally I insist on genuine parts for most of the cars. But with car like Matiz, you don't have liberty of choosing which spares to go for.
You have to take whatever you can get.

Always genuine. My mechanic also includes the empty boxes for the new parts and all the old (removed) parts including bushes, washers, tubing etc. when he returns the car. I go through all of this and discard it later. This probably qualifies for one more quirk in the quirkiness thread.

Original/genuine ones only even at the risk of costing three times as much........couple of exceptions in the past few years -

1) My Ikon rear silencer box & pipe had rusted so I went for a local one sometime last year. Price difference was more than 6k IIRC - pretty satisfied as they've lasted two monsoons & still going strong.
2) Had put in a pair of "local" OSRVM (after the left one had broken) on the Ikon because the pair were cheaper than what ONE of the originals would have cost and also the originals were not in stock - this was a BAD decision because the glass quality is not good, images are 1:1 instead of being reduced marginally & it is not anti-glare. Never again!

Cheers

Hi,

Firstly this poll needs to be broken into 2 parts

1> Mechanical (Engine , suspension , braking etc)
2. Cosmetic.

Now coming to the topic at hand, I would go for genuine spares only when I know a better high performance brand option is not available. For eg in a Maruti you get MGP and SGP parts as well as after market. i would choose SGP wherever possible. Brake pads there are better high performance ones available for almost all cars, Oil I use Mobil 1 hope you get the picture.

Cheap repaired(delhi manufactured) absolute NO.

You should have made this a public poll. It'd be interesting to see who chose non-authentic spares - for any reason. I feel sorry for their cars.

Of course, I'm a company-branded guy - the 8.5K rear spoiler order from SGA / Maruti is a study-in-motion. Never have/never will look at spurious spares; for me my car is a living, breathing entity that has feelings.

By your last choice, I presume you're implying those cases where the car model has been discontinued since a long time and company spares are certified to have stopped ?

I will always go in for the genuine parts even though there might be cheaper alternatives in the market. In long term use it will be better for the car.
