Scoop! Kia SP Concept-based compact SUV spotted in India

Kia's upcoming compact SUV has been spotted testing in India for the first time. It is based on the SP Concept which was showcased at the 2018 Auto Expo. It is expected to be the brand's first offering in India and could be launched sometime in 2019.

The test mule has an upright front fascia featuring Kia's tiger nose grille and a wide air dam. The SUV has a rear quarter glass and ORVMs with integrated turn signals. It is riding on 5-spoke alloy wheels.

Technical details about Kia's upcoming compact SUV are still unknown. It is expected to compete with the Hyundai Creta and the Renault Duster in the Indian market.

When you have two cars looking similar (Harrier and Kia Concept SP) you leave people scratching their heads as to what to do and then they wait for a comparo and then they plonk their money. Kia is a new and a fledgling company for us, Tata is a tried and tested one, here. Let's see how this pans out. That said the Kia Concept SP taillight is Creta'ish and the rest of the car is fresh.

the model will also be sold in many global markets like North America, Australia and even China where it will be launched more or less in the similar timeframe as India.

This new Kia SUV will rival Hyundai Creta and the upcoming Nissan Kicks and will come with both petrol and diesel engine options with a choice of manual as well as automatic transmissions.

Things like warranty, reliability will decide the fate of this mode. Have seen good number of Creta owners being unhappy about braking performance, Verna owners facing engine and NVH related issues!

KIA needs to be careful and deliver better products than its parent company, just like how Skoda out performed VW in premium segment.

The design looks better than the Creta to my eyes. I am just wondering if the engines will be shared with Creta, what will be the differentiating factor of this? I am frankly very confused with the positioning of the car.
So far, just putting a new skin on a car has not helped like Duster/Terrano. All it will do is take a small % of Creta buyers to the Kia SP. Obvisouly, most people will prefer the Creta over this given Hyundai's brand reputation and Creta being such a blockbuster vehicle.

IIRC they both will share the same engines . Kia will try to position itself at a slight premium over Hyundai . But it might backfire like it did for VW in India where Skoda gained more brownie points and not VW .

Kia might provide extra features which are missing in the Creta to differentiate itself . Main problem for KIA will be pricing. Creta is already overpriced for what it offers. So it will be tough job out there for Kia.

Production-spec Kia SP Concept to be feature-loaded

Kia Motors is striving for best-in-class quality and equipment with the production SP Concept, which spearheads the company’s entry into India.

Kia Motors is readying the production version of the SP Concept for an India launch in August 2019.

And the Korean carmaker wants to make a big splash in the crowded SUV space with its first offering for the country. An upright SUV design – something Indian buyers like – aside, Kia will also rely on an upmarket and feature-loaded cabin to draw buyers in.
