Default April 2018 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

NOTES:

1: Thanks to the team at Auto Punditz for sharing these sales numbers with us!

2: Only cars that sell 500+ units (and thus, the relevant ones) have been included in the gainers & losers chart.

3. These manufacturer-reported sales numbers are factory dispatches to dealerships. They are NOT retail sales figures to end customers.

Nice to see two Tatas in the top 20

Why are Ecosport sales so spiky, and what happened to the WRV?

Toyota has lost sales in all models except the all time great Innova. Even the Octavia out sold the Corolla last month. Unless the Yaris clicks, truly a one trick pony.

Skoda is now the dominant brand in India - well and truly. With a small number of sales outlets and horrible A.S.S, managing the numbers they are is quite impressive.

Tata should cut the chaff and focus on their newer products and soon. Not sure if it makes business sense to keep manufacturing lines open for cars hardly anyone buys.

EDIT: Read today that Tata plans to open 100 new sales outlets in tier 2 cities/towns. That's a brilliant strategy. Omnipresence is the single biggest reason for Maruti's astounding numbers. If Tata follows through, then even Hyundai better watch out.

Maruti Omni > Nissan+Datsun+VW+Skoda+Fiat (I think it boils down to growth in the Rural economy)

Fall in every manufacturer number except Maruti & Toyota (MoM)

Maruti has got 4 models in 20K + category which is simply astonishing given the size of Indian car market.

Renault looks to have lost the plot with Captur. Yaris numbers will be something to look forward to in coming months. Almost all car manufacturers have registered neutral to negative growth except Maruti. Its dominance is increasing gradually.

Here's my take on the sales figures:

Datsun/Nissan: All Nissan cars are sales duds barely managing to stay afloat with three digit numbers. Datsun's performance is slightly more consistent, but dismayal at the same time. The Redi-Go is the only car which manages to sell in 4 figures and that too isn't exactly an achievement considering the segment it competes in.

Fiat: Absolutely no interest towards the Indian market and it shows in the numbers. Cars struggling to sell in two digit numbers. Linea sells only 4 Units!!!

Ford: Aspire sees a huge drop from 2.5K to 900 units. Same with the Figo. Hope this is because of the impending facelift and not a demand issue. Ecosport sales also drop by about 1K but still within acceptable limits. Endeavour does close to 400, which is acceptable for a 35 lac Ford.

HM-Mitsubishi: Consider it to be a live example of what Fiat will end up like a year or earlier down the line. Not one car dispatched.

Honda: No Accord dispatches this month. Same with the Amaze. City drops by about 1K to 3.6K units (Yaris effect?). Jazz also drops to the late 1k mark. In general, all cars have lost by about 1K to 1.5K units. Honda would want to take this seriously.

Hyundai: Creta is the Virat Kohli of numbers clocking a consistent 9-10K units. Excellent numbers for a 16 lac SUV. Elantra is the typical D-segment sedan which suffers due to SUVs struggling to touch 200 units. Seems to be a good run for Hyundai this month otherwise, with all other cars doing fairly well for themselves (including the Tucson)

JEEP: Compass sales drop to 1.7K. I think sales have settled down now. Time to bring the Renegade now to drive volumes further.

Mahindra: XUV facelift seems to be off to a good start. KUV sees a sharp drop from 3K to a meagre 1.7K units. Nuvosport and Rexton sell in single digits while the Scorpio does 4K units, lower than the last month.

Maruti: Yet again, one of the few manufacturers portraying consistency across products. All cars except for the Brezza seem to have done well with only the Alto losing a paltry 2K units (out of 23K ). An excellent run for MSIL again.

Renault: Captur drops to 200 units. Duster does around 1.2K. Will be interesting to see if they hold these numbers. Same with the Lodgy. The Kwid does 5K units which still isn't anywhere close to the Alto.

Volkswagen: The Tiguan manages to stay afloat with 100 units while the Passat only does 37. Vento drops to 400 units while Polo and Ameo struggle in the lower 1000s.

Skoda: None of the cars (understandably) do more than 1000 units. The Rapid is the only one clocking more than 500 of em'. Octavia does better than the Elantra! Kodiaq sales aren't all that bad for a 40 lac Skoda.

TATA: Hexa again drops to 800 units. Tiago is the star of the show consistently bringing in the numbers while the Nexon plays the supporting role. The Tigor could clearly do with better engines to drive volumes.

Toyota: Etios and Liva twins struggle. Innova brings in fat profits with volumes and the same goes for the fortuner. Corolla does around 200 units. Yet again facing the heat from SUVs. Too early to judge how the Yaris is doing, maybe a final verdict can be passed one or two months down the line?

Is there any slowing down the Maruti juggernaut?! At this rate, even a few decades will not be enough for others to catchup. One upping Maruti will remain a pipe dream. Even my great grand child will ask "Kitna deti hai".

The most improved brand over the last one year has got to be Tata. Kudos to them. Turning out to be a truly remarkable volte-face. The Nexon is the flag bearer for this change. It is only consolidating its position strongly by consistently selling more than 4k units. Lets hope they remain focused and churn out more such world class products.

Seems Ecosport numbers have already peaked. The constant increase in prices hasn't helped. Freestyle and Ecosport are critical to Fords future in India. As a prospective Ford owner I'll be watching this space with bated breath.

Folks at Honda will be hoping the new Amaze will return good numbers. Kind of expected W-RV would see a drop in sales with introduction of Nexon AMT.

Time for the likes of Nissan, Mitsubishi and Fiat to exit?

Time has come for Tata to open Hexa to commercial sales. It should sell 2000+ if they does so, considering the volumes that Innova does and there is practically no competition to it currently. Also, Tigor is begging for a bigger heart. It's a worthy compact sedan, stylish and practical.

By bigger heart, I guess we are talking about diesel engine. Going by recent trend, petrol variant is outselling diesel by huge margin and the petrol engine in Tigor closely matches performance offered by the competition. Tata has made mistake again by pricing Tigor far lower than competition. As result, I am sure many don't even consider it alongside Dzire / Xcent relegating it to a lower segment.

Whoa! More than 55% market share. Maruti, you beauty!! Hyundai, the number two player, with 15.87% market share can only tell how Maruti has dominated and destroyed the competition in Indian car space.

Real life Thanos!! Snap .

I think the new Amaze has something to do with the fall in Honda numbers and nothing else. This is what came from the Honda camp:
"Mr. Rajesh Goel, SVP and Director, Sales & Marketing, Honda Cars India Ltd. said “HCIL sales in April are as per plan. We are preparing for the launch of All New Amaze this month and did not have stocks of outgoing Amaze. Besides, City and WR-V which were launched last year had witnessed new model sales spurt around this time. Both these reasons are reflected in lower wholesales in April this year as compared to last year. It’s a temporary phenomenon. There is a very strong interest from the market for the All New Amaze and we are confident that overall sales will be robust after the introduction of new model.”

It is really sad to see the global giants like Nissan,. Fiat and Renault struggling in India.

It truly shows how well Maruti has read the Indian market. Toyota needs to ensure that the Yaris clicks to make a mark in the passenger car segment. Their best sellers are UVs.
I wrote an article sometime back on LinkedIn on Nissan. Sharing the link for the same
