Re: What features do you feel are must-haves when purchasing a car?

Recently, I have just been looking at cars with ISOFIX child mounts. So important in today's times but I still hardly see any proper regulation coming out regarding children's safety while travelling. Recent update on having the passenger airbag mandatory is kind of silly without proper knowledge as we regularly see kids propped up in the front

As he has pointed out, its probably good to have these features but we really do need to bring home the point of using them properly as well.

Enjoyed every bit of it
Though I do not enjoy sunroof, I think some people enjoy it. My kids seems to like it for night drives, morning/evening drives. I think for them, it is an interesting stuff to enjoy for long drives. I agree that is a pain during hot summers as the sun screen can’t block the entire sun-light. I have also started keeping the screen open to let more sun light in the mornings/evening, though I never open the glass area. I have realized that many people I know are suffering from Vitamin D deficiency, yes in our Indian conditions.

I would like to add the following to the OP based on what I miss currently
Keyless entry: This saves you from having to dig for the keys and a very useful feature.
360-degree camera: Even with parking sensors all around, it is difficult to park in very tight spots with very little margin for errors. A 360-degree view camera will help you to park in peace in those tricky situations. I have faced issues with raised curbs/pavements when there is vehicle from opposite side while going through narrow lanes and wished that this was available, rather than waiting for someone standing nearby to give a green signal.

Re: What are some features without which you won't buy a car?

Over and above the usual suspects (ABS, air bags, reverse cam Et al.) I have some usability deal breakers.
  • Welcome lights and/or puddle lamps
    • Hard to live without, especially in Bangalore considering how well lit the streets are here
  • Android auto/Apple Car play
    • Thought this was not a big deal when I got my current car. Coupled with wifie's horrendous navigation skills, I am missing G-Maps on the ICE so much
  • Intermittent wipers
    • I am looking at you Maruti
  • Backlit window switches
    • Would be happier if it's like how Ford does -- lights turn off when the windows are locked. Again nice to have and probably I might be the only person who would notice
  • Damped switches on the stalks
    • Personal pet peeve. That "tak tak" sound every time I have to flash or toggle high beams annoys me to no end

Re: What are some features without which you won't buy a car?

My must-have list -

1. Tilt and telescopic steering. Long travel for the front seats. Basically, 6 footer compatibility!

2. Auto-folding ORVMs

3. AA enabled infotainment unit. I am fully reliant upon GMaps. Poor navigation skills and a job that needs me to criss-cross the city arent a pleasant combination without GMaps!

4. Safety package to reach atleast a 4 star rating (typically 6 airbags, ESP, ABS-EBD)

5. AT (any).

Re: What are some features without which you won't buy a car?

My List (not in order of preference)

The essentials
  • A minimum of two airbags, ABS, crash sensing door locks.
  • Defogger for the rear window.
  • Auto dimming IRVM.
  • Electric mirrors.
  • Adjustable Steering, atleast for tilt.
Would love to have
  • 5 star safety, airbags all around, TC, ESP, rollover mitigation, auto braking etc.
  • Dimming ORVMS
  • Fuss free TC type AT, now that I have been spoiled by one.
  • Cruise control.
  • Organ type accelerator pedal.
  • Fantastic audio setup, but not ear bleeding loud.
  • Huge Adjustable armrest
  • Telescopic steering
  • Ventilated Seats
  • HID/LED headlamp.
  • Auto folding ORVMs
  • All 4 automatic windows

Re: What are some features without which you won't buy a car?

Must have features that I looked for while buying my car 3 years back:

1) At least 2 airbags and ABS.
2) All power windows
3) Central locking
4) Remote boot open
5) Steering mounted controls
6) Good AC
7) Electrically adjustable ORVM

After using and loving my car for the last 3 years I would like to have below features in my car when I make a purchase in the next 7 years

1) Driver armrest
2) Cruise control.
3) Touch screen (only for the ease of using maps)
4) 6 airbags
5) DRL
6) Driver's seat height adjust
7) Rear wiper

Push start button and auto AC are not something that I would actually seek, if they're there I am okay with them.

Re: What are some features without which you won't buy a car?

Ventilated seats.
https://www.team-bhp.com/forum/india...ury-india.html (Ventilated Seats, no more a luxury in India!)
Why not consider it as a must have feature. For me it is as necessary as AC
PS : I have a 20 year old Santro which doesn't even have power steering but then, even a monk can have his favorite supercar

Re: What are some features without which you won't buy a car?

Well the 2019 Figo Titanium that I have has all the features that I wanted and none of the ones I didn't care about.

I was specifically looking for:
Decent Handling
Awesome Acceleration (TDCI)
Front and Rear Adjustable Head Restraints
Auto AC
Rear Camera
Bluetooth
Steering Mounted Audio Controls
2 Airbags
Fog Lamps (How is this a premium feature?)

ABS was mandatory when I bought

Now after living with the car for over a year, the only features I yearn for are
1. Android Auto. Navi Maps are OK but I would rather have Google Maps navigation on my touchscreen.
2. ISOFIX Mounts: Mounting and dismounting the baby is a pain every time.
3. IR cut glass (not absolutely necessary but good to have in our heat)

Re: What are some features without which you won't buy a car?

Here is my list:
Must have:
1. 6, preferably 8 or 9 airbags including one for driver’s knee.
2. Stability control
3. Disk brakes on all wheels.
4. HID or preferably LED headlights. Adaptive headlights that would observe the oncoming traffic and adjust would be greatly preferable.
5. Adaptive cruise control
6. Active safety aids like collision avoidance and lane assist
7. Ventilated seats
8. Electric seats with memory for both driver and front passenger
9. Auto dimming mirror inside as well as at least on driver side rear view mirror.
10. Large screen for navigation preferably at eye level.
11. Keyless entry and start along with request sensors on all doors and boot. At least on front doors and boot.
12. My next vehicle has to be electric.

Would be great to have:
1. All digital speedometer display.
2. High quality leather like Nappa
3. Excellent sound system with 6 or more speakers.

Currently my VW Passat has most of these features except adaptive cruise control, lane assist and collision avoidance. It is not electric obviously.

Re: What are some features without which you won't buy a car?

I wish that the good old Engine Temperature Gauge is also brought back, which is necessary to monitor the engine temperature and prevent overheating.

Most of the new cars do not seem to have this, but replaced with a simple warning light.

I hate attaching those phone holders onto my windshield or clip on to dashboard or AC vents. Now some might come with the argument of Android Auto/Apple car play. But I don't want to do that for every short trip. I want to place my phone somewhere on the dash with the screen facing me. Is that too much to ask these days ?
I hear you. This is on my wish list as well. A tray thingy coming out of the dash (like a CD) to hold a phone/tab would be cool and much needed.

These are some of the features I wish a car would have:
1. All LED lights to ensure no power wastage
2. In-built humidifier to maintain same level of humidity when AC is used. This would ensure freshness, especially on longer drives
3. Free wheel clutch, to increase fuel efficiency and force a predictive driving style
4 Nice large navigation screen, to see maps when navigation, etc, instead of antique analog meters, etc
5. Hard stainless steel body exoskeleton (like the cyber truck), to ensure no dent repair/paint jobs/body work
6. Cameras in addition to mirrors to additionally give better views
7. Automatic window darkener/lightener to reduce heat when parking in the sun, to reduce glare
8. 4 wheel drive without differentials, to remove unnecessary things such as diff lock, etc. It should be an intelligent system to know how much power should be given to which wheel and take the steering also into consideration
9. Net type seats (like most office chairs) to ensure breathability with less sweat

Re: What are some features without which you won't buy a car?

I've always wondered why do we have the fuel level indicator stuck on bars and a rough estimate. Why can't there be an option to show close to accurate numerical reading of available fuel? The current sensors are anyway capturing the analog values and MID is using fuel metering to give out to instant mileage. A combination would help.

Next is OBD based info. Why can't manufactures tap into this market and provide the information on your head unit or cell phone. They don't have to do anything other than connect a OBD scanner inside and stream the data. Provide some nice skins for the app and you are good to go!

Last is a GPS chip in the car. How expensive are those? And make the insurance companies foot part of the cost. A lot of peace of mind will come out of it. If GPS data is stored locally for a bit, even crime investigation will get a boost.

Re: What are some features without which you won't buy a car?

Such an interesting thread this is. There seems to be a consensus on the following
1. A minimum of 4 Airbags
2. Rear defogger and Rear Wiper for SUVs and Hatches, all variants.
3. ABS & EBD
I cannot dispute those. I think all manufacturers need to add these as stock items in the same way as you have brake pedals and windscreen wipers. Costing has to be done as if these are standard items.
As far as the rest of all listed I am quite amused to read all the views. I feel none are required or all are required. Luxury has no limit as much as it doesn’t need sense to exist. A car is always more than a just car. If it weren’t everyone would drive a Maruti 800, why spend ₹4.10 crore on a newly announced Bentley
If you can afford it go for all the bells and whistles. If you cannot then be happy with those you’re getting. It’s a bit Socialist and Anachronistic to declare some features that afford luxury/satisfaction/distinction as being not necessarily required. Every feature is required but the feature required the most is cash in your wallet
