There is no duty exemption, only the homologation requirements is waived off. GTO has already clarified this: https://www.team-bhp.com/forum/india...ml#post4419567 (Govt. may let carmakers import 2,500 cars/year without hassles)

| ![]() Can't help but be irrational and quip, if Toyota retails it for INR 80L they have my money.Having lived in Jakarta for a couple of years and being a proud ex-owner of Vellfire, I can give a first-hand account of this mini-van being the best money can buy - Brilliant ergonomics, rear seat comfort for the second and third row, well thought through interior features while being luxuriously appointed, pretty imposing looks (Chrome or not), and the peace of mind Toyota comes with. In Indonesia, it retails for a roughly converted INR 70L (depending on the config), and a price +/- 10L would be reasonable in India. Sure, it is crazy expensive, a Japanese brand and only about 180 horses but where are the options in this space? This is easily better than the V-Class we have in India, and knowing the corporate / hotel circuit in India, a couple of thousand units would be lapped up very quickly. This is the go-to car for the rich and ultra-rich in Indonesia, as well as a premium fleet taxi for the largest local player, and I don't see it doing badly in India. Those who haven't seen it in flash would be surprised when they do - enormous and imposing. |

(1) Carnival is more utilitarian when compared to Alphard / Vellfire. While being decently equipped, it can't really match Vellfire's top-notch interiors. (2) It's also bigger than Vellfire, hence accommodating more passengers, whereas Vellfire is built to transport 5 folks in great comfort. (3) Also, it's significantly cheaper than Vellfire. Both cars would appeal to completely different segments. Vellfire / Alphard are built for corporates, small families that like to travel in style, class and comfort, premium hotel guests, etc while Carnival to me is a mid-premium people mover.

| ![]() Looking at the price tag, I do feel that Toyota is competing with the Mercedes V-Class. While that is obviously not going to work out very well (ask the Accord which is more expensive than an equivalent car from a luxury marque), I don’t see why it would fail either. People will naturally pay for the Toyota reliability, and this would be the true upgrade for Innova/Crysta owners. I feel Toyota can price it better, as the engine is the same as the Camry which is locally manufactured. They should bring it as a CKD and undercut the V-Class, and then watch the cash registers ringing. Last edited by artemis_fowl : 18th July 2019 at 06:24. |

| ![]() Carnival (overseas) is a bone basic car with terrible looks. The rear looks too utilitarian and It's one of the few cars that I actually dislike. People I know have owned it and disposed of in no times. Pray they don't launch it here. I don't think it will be a serious contender for the T badge. |

| ![]() There is a slim chance that a 80 lakh Toyota MPV will sell when a 60L Toyota SUV did not (Prado). Toyota may be overestimating the MPV fascination of Indian buyers. IMHO, an MPV doesn't give you the same kind of "status" as a luxury sedan or an SUV, the very important ingredient for a typical Indian buyer spending more than 40L. |

| ![]() The point is, the Prado used to sell at 60L more than a decade ago. The market was not so mature back then like it is now. Hence it didn't find as many takers. Look at the Land Cruiser LC200, it sells at 2+ Cr on-road today and still sells around dozen copies every month. The Vellfire is targeted at a niche segment. Obviously Toyota is not looking at volumes here. But the fact is there lies a segment above the Innova Crysta wherein buyers are willing to spend so much on a people mover. Going by the number of private registered V Class' I see in NCR, specially South Delhi and Gurgaon, I am sure a segment exists and the Vellfire will have a sizeable chunk of takers despite its astronomical price. It is likely that most of these private buyers would already have a couple of high-end sedans in their garage. |

BHPian ![]() | ![]() Is it MB V Class launch triggering this rumour? This thread will go down among many other Toyota launch rumour threads in this forum eventually. |
