If Suzuki is indeed going to use the Fiat 1.6 diesel which is BS6 compliant, then for sure it means that they botched up the whole 1.5 diesel BS6 compliance! Else why would they develop a brand new Diesel engine and then go out to buy a very similar one from another manufacturer? My assumption is that Suzuki probably underestimated the cost of upgrading this 1.5 engine to BS6 and post realising this they must have got a competitive cost from Fiat which might have been more competitive and thus felt that its better for them to outsource this engine for now and then see how the whole diesel market landscape pans out.

Bad planning from Suzuki? Probably yes, but they can afford to do these mistakes due to their sheer size!

Re: Rumour: Maruti-Suzuki to introduce 1.6-Litre diesel engine in 2020

Whether its a 1.5 or a 1.6 BSVI DDIS, more importantly Maruti needs to get a good product in the roadmap, which would be really worthy of that engine.

Something like an SCross++. Given what we have been treated to in that priceline in the market, the product I think is equally critical as well.

(Sorry for the off topic remark).

I hope they provide auto transmission in Scross. And not the stupid old school 4 speed which they keep plonking everywhere. Either a 7 speed cvt or tc is needed

Re: Rumour: Maruti-Suzuki to introduce 1.6-Litre diesel engine in 2020

For Guys doubting this news, here is the proof.

Maruti Suzuki starts testing the BS6 1.6D S Cross.

Quote:
The S-Cross test mule spotted performing emissions testing with testing equipment attached at the back and can be seen sporting the 1.6 badge on the tailgate. The front fender also shows the presence of the DDiS badge and it confirms that the motor is a Fiat-sourced unit

The news I've been waiting for! Hope it's sensibly priced and the turbo lag is taken care off. Can't wait!

Now that 1.6 is being localised, can we expect our dumb FIAT to relaunch their sedan with this Engine option? I have a feeling they are planning to bring an entry level SUV with this engine option and place it just below Compass.

Suzuki may have tried old school method of reboring a smaller engine, they never had an expertise in diesel engines. The customers buying the diesel cars with 1.5L DDIS engine have an uncertain future. I always doubted the 5-10% increase of power and torque when they introduced the bigger diesel engine.

Re: Rumour: Maruti-Suzuki to introduce 1.6-Litre diesel engine in 2020

This is pretty good news, and comes as a breather for Maruti which was clearly struggling. I think the projected dent in sales by going with petrol only options for cars like the S Cross made maruti rethink it's strategy.

So it's only the Fiat 1.3 - India's national engine that seems to be retired. The 1.6 and 2.0 will continue to make their presence felt and who knows, we might as well have another national Fiat Engine. It speaks a lot about their engineering prowess.

Pretty sure Maruti wouldn't have opted for this engine unless the 1.6 is getting localized.

Good news for both camps! But I certainly don't see any future for FIAT. Jeep may be considering the 1.6 for a new SUV, or cheaper variants of Compass.

Fiat has now new siblings globally. Citroen and Peugeot. Perhaps this engine will be used in the Citroen SUVs and sedans when they launch here next year.

And Maruti can use this a larger SUV, even MG might use it in their compact SUV. Anyway Multijets are one of the best diesel engine families globally. They are reliable and highly efficient too.

Re: Rumour: Maruti-Suzuki to introduce 1.6-Litre diesel engine in 2020

Deal from Fiat must have been irresistible, else it hardly makes any sense to ignore the 1.5L tax bracket rule! Even Hyundai shaved off 100cc from their diesels to keep the price in check after adding BS6 equipment.

Maruti never had a successful drivers car after the swift, hopefully this new 1.6 Diesel equipped cars offer us more smiles per hour

Re: Rumour: Maruti-Suzuki to introduce 1.6-Litre diesel engine in 2020

As far as i know: the FIAT 1.6 and 2.0 mjd II are very closely related: shared engine block and most internals. Unlike the smaller 1.3mjd which has a different architecture. So if the 2litre diesel has been localized is it not fair to assume that the 1.6 pretty much is toofor all practical purposes? Also this suggests Maruti does not believe a proper petrol mild 48v hybrid will be cost/price competitive with a bs6 diesel for years yet?

The only way that can happen is to give it a good automatic torque converter gear box.

Re: Rumour: Maruti-Suzuki to introduce 1.6-Litre diesel engine in 2020

I think Vitara is overdue. Infact I believe that should have been the car launched in India instead of S cross. 1.6 would have been expensive just as it was on s cross. But atleast with a better looking design it could have sold a bit more.
Localised 1.6 may be a good news for the fans of DDIS 320 but for Maruti to get some good numbers, it needs Vitara.
