Ok, let's leave Kia before you say it's a Hyundai. How many of us had heard of MG before it landed here? Our market is generally unkind to home-grown cars and is very welcoming to foreign brands, even unheard of. Peugeot, Skoda were unheard of in India until they hit our shores and their first offerings were all lapped up. I still feel Korean card would have worked for M&M. And, it is a Korean car. It's not like I am asking them to sell Scorpio as Ssangyong.
Agreed that Indian customers are attracted towards foreign products but I don't think that card would've worked here. After a flopped product, not everyone would be eager to buy from the same manufacturer. (Remember we're talking about cars here that cost north of a million rupees and not a cellphone) Since it costs so high, anyone who's willing to buy will always do a thorough research on the brand reliability and else. (Reason why Maruti still sells their tin cans)
And considering anyone who buys a car today has lived in the 90's where Mahindra was known for the go anywhere MM550.

Another reason is that Ssangyong still doesn't have a dealership or a service center in India. Where'd you service your car? In Mahindra service centers.

Don't know about you but I'd pick a Mahindra with such a heritage instead of a Ssangyong everyday

On the other hand, the Ford Ecopsort Diesel with much lower power and torque figures on paper (100 PS, 205 NM) than the XUV, yet the car manages the 0-100 run in 12.5 seconds! Now, where is the almost 50% more torque claimed by Mahindra gone?
In Gear Acceleration, this where the extra torque has gone. The XUV300 is 2.65 seconds & 2.48 seconds quicker than the Ford. All figures are from Autocar India's YouTube comparison of compact SUVs.

Any reason why the petrol version does not have an AT gearbox? Can it be low FE? Smaller Crossovers without Petrol automatic in this day are surprising.

I think it's a business case. The expectations of this engine variant might be less. And you wouldn't want to further reduce the number by offering AT and MT.

For why MT over AT can be debated and my guess is that they don't have a small auto box which can be packaged in the architecture. Add to that the overall pricing. Plus if you want to market this as a enthusiastic car, it better be manual.

In that case would it not be an option to at least offer AMT ?
When I was searching for an Automatic car below 10 lakhs, it was surprising to see no AMT in the XUV300 Petrol offering, though there is one for the diesel.

I think this is a good move and together with an Automatic offering can bring in some sales volumes for Mahindra. The car is competent and deserves a second look by buyers. If the expectations from the T GDI are anything to go by, this experiment may turn out beneficial and make this car a fun to drive car.

I hope they've retuned the suspension for this extra power. The regular XUV300 already struggles to put its power down.

(P.S. Anyone else love these "flying laps" with standing starts?)

I hope this brings in a traditional automatic transmission to the plate, I feel the XUV 300 is one of the best looking and performing compact SUVs available today but let down really badly by the lacklustre AMT currently on offer.

Understand what is bhp and torque first. Higher acceleration and top speed is the result of higher bhp. Torque is useful for hauling heavier loads as such. So XUV having a high torque versus Ecosport, will come into play when 0-100 times are measured with fully loaded cars (loaded to their max payload).

Adding to the post, Horsepower means your Car/Bike can go faster, and Torque, is the main basis of a vehicle (Car or Bike) to perform work — specifically, the twisting force applied by the crankshaft. Because there's a limit on how fast you can spin an engine, having higher torque allows for greater horsepower at lower rpms. That is why a Torqy engine helps especially in the Mountains.
Please correct me for any wrong interpretation of Torque vs BHP.

True, but I still cannot stomach that side profile. Maybe they could've added a tail mounted spare wheel ( which would still seem strange ). Can they do anything to fix the side profile, because otherwise I feel this could be THE car in the segment. Good engines, good interior, good feature set, good almost everything.

But that side profile looks like it is an incomplete car. I can understand why they had to do what they did but if they can channel the creativity of their honestly crazy designers ( ) to find a solution to this problem, it'll pay dividends for them.
I know several people who were put off by the side profile/looks.

I am highlighting this because, from the front, in my opinion, it is one of the meanest looking cars under 20 lacs.

The more powerful 130PS Turbo-Petrol to be offered in all XUV300 variants.

- The engine will be offered in all four trims: W4, W6, W8, and W8 (O).
- This engine develops 20PS and 30Nm more than the current unit.
- Likely to be offered only with a 6-speed manual initially.

This mill debuted at Auto Expo 2020 and was supposed to be limited to an exclusive ‘Sportz’ trim showcased at the motor show. However, it seems like Mahindra could offer it as standard now.

It will be great fun car to drive. Already 110 bhp XUV petrol MT is very stable and has good driveability.

I wish Mahindra to make certain changes in addition bumping up power :

1. Short gear throw to make it more fun

2. Reduce clutch travel

3. Aluminium pedals

4. Reduce ground clearance and make suspension bit stiff

5. Sporty exhaust

Regards
