re: Toyota to launch low-spec Yaris for fleet & taxi segment. EDIT: With CNG too (page 4)

I cannot imagine what else Toyota can strip out of the bottom end J-Optional variant to shave off costs. Only items that might actual reduce the BOM cost are:
  1. Alloy Wheels
  2. Projector Headlamps (very marginal added cost)
  3. Cooled glove box (very marginal added cost)

The remaining "features" such as keyless entry are so cheap in terms of BOM cost that it would make no difference to the product cost.

The base variant is already quite stripped down and due to minimum safety standards that have come in place in India, things like front airbags, airbag, rear parking sensors etc cannot be removed. So, I can see only about 25K of savings that is possible by stripping down the J-Optional base variant.

So, if we took the existing Rs. 8.76 lakhs of ex-showroom cost of the base J-Optional variant, and stripped it down further, Toyota could possible come to Rs. 8.5 lakhs. However, to come close to the previous Etios' price range, Toyota would have to shave off at least an additional Rs. 1 lakh. So, they would have to price at Rs. 7.5 lakh ex-showroom for the base manual variant to make it meaningful. This would mean shaving a lot off the margins to gain market share.

Toyota Yaris for fleet market launched at Rs 9.12 lakh. Based on the lower-spec J variant but costs Rs 1.96 lakh less. Primarily available in a white exterior colour, though other finishes are available on request. Toyota says the fleet variant of the Yaris comes with seven airbags.

Nice killing the Yaris brand.
The small number of buyers who would consider it before, will not shy away.
Besides, fleet owners and govt ‘babus’ wouldn’t care about the 7 airbags imo.

The first fleet variant vehicle with all-round airbags. If I ever want to travel in a cab after this COVID scare is over, my preference certainly will be to use a Yaris if available. The safety net of all-round airbags will be a very powerful differentiator. This will force manufacturers to bring curtain airbags to lower segment.

Appreciate Toyota for keeping the air bags and other safety features as is. They should've ditched the Alloy wheels and Projectors as well to reduce the cost further. But still I don't think this move will help TKM by any mean as the Yaris is already killed.

Saw this yellow plate Yaris near Yeshwantpur metro station today. I was surprised to find that it was a VX variant!

Vahan website shows that it's owned by a travels company and is a CVT variant.
