The Ambassador Encore (BS IV) brochure from September 2013. This variant with the BS IV version of the 1489 cc, HM Stride diesel (originally the BMC diesel) was launched in September 2013. Te engine was fitted with an intercooler turbochager to conform to the new pollution norms, though belatedly. During the last year's Ambassadors sold around 400-500 cars a month (incl the 1800 ISZ) of which more than 50 % were bought by the Kolkata taxi drivers and the rest by taxi trade in other parts of the country, government and a minuscule amount by private buyers. The very fact that HM launched the Encore in September 2013 and the lockout at their main Uttarpara plant (W.B.) was declared on 24.05.2014, makes this the Ambassador variant with the shortest life in history, for this iconic car (1958-2014). It also illustrates the fact that despite the mounting losses the lockout was not pre-planned, as they would have not invested in R&D (though HM is well known to for it's shoddy R&D) for launching a new model with a nine month shelf life.

Wow, thank you for sharing this. During my school days, this was the car I wanted to own. Ended up owing the Zen Estilo! I read in one of the automobile magazine that when a survey was done (in the 90s) on which premium car Indians want to own, Zen was quoted as equally as the Mercedes. One iconic design, I still don't understand why they killed it to introduce something like the Estilo.
